I’m probably getting ready to dump a bunch of L lenses in favor of an 800 f/5.6

    Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L – potentially selling
    Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L
    Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II
    Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L – potentially selling.
    Canon EF 135mm f/2.0L
    Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L – potentially selling.
    Canon EF 200mm f/2.8L
^ primes I currently own. (inc. but not listed is the 3.5 24mm)

I’m probably going to sell several of them.. If I do decide to sell them, I’ll surely keep you in the loop.

    I’ve got the 24mm f3.5L TS.E — I absolutely love it.

bitchslap – a portraits not a portrait to me if the eyes don’t pop.

seth–ten grand ? Get a couple of light stands, 1 or two flashes with a some radio triggers, set to manual run in half to quarter power, figure out exposure, get a large umbrella and a reflector+holder. Voila, portable portrait studio. Get a large oval reflector with white/silver; background stand kit with some seamless..

you’d be amazed how many different looks you can obtain.

Nice thing about manual mode is, you don’t have to buy high end flashes.. Just something to trigger them remotely; in which case, most have sync ports and you can buy a flash and a sync cord. I personally would avoid this because being tethered sucks. But, for 300-500 bucks you can have a pretty nice kit for strobist work

haha iliketag — That craigslist link: “I have a modest studio in my basement.” What it really means: “It puts the lotion on it’s skin or it gets the hose again!!”, all that really comes to mind. LOL

–WCS – Of course, I should mention that I don’t take it to the grocery store ;p Just heavily inhabited public places where people are just leisurely doing everything and doing nothing

WCS-I take my 70-200/24-70 and 1dx just about everywhere I go. I don’t own any small pocket cameras aside from my phone–I can’t get the results I want from that. Doesn’t mean shit about being pro or amateur.. I’m constantly networking with new potential clients and as a niche–I do a few free photos for people. It’s effective. It’s hard to sell a product to a potential client using a camera phone.

    Seth–

They make plenty of portable softboxes that simply “pop out”, thereafter you simply Velcro the outer diffuser on.. Generally, an assistant will occupy the monopod attached to these. . There’s actually 3 things I like to utilize: a scrim (if it’s bright as fuck with minimal cloud coverage), a reflector, and a lightstick.

The “creative time” you have and the reception are where you can focus on using multiple speedlites–the rest of it, I’d suggest just taking a journalistic approach unless you absolutely know what you’re doing.. Prelighting the ceremony with hotlights is a choice–you just have to plan your scene. The point is, if you’re not 100% sure about strobist work, slap the speedlite in the hotshoe with a stofen or have an assistant shadow you with a softbox/umbrella with an ETTL enabled radio trigger (if it’s an option).

In my opinion: Weddings = Fast glass, good body, full frame sensor. Sometimes you just don’t have the option to blast people with flash.. Sometimes you can use hotlights, sometimes you have to use the light that’s available.. I did a wedding where a dude had epilepsy; absolutely NO flash was allowed (period) — he was a groomsman.. I didn’t know that until the day of.. Thank god for the 1.2L’s 🙂 Imagine having to do that with a f/4-5.6? Not possible.

Warren–You think anyone here actually believed you? You are a bit slow, aren’t you. Apparently, you don’t understand the concept of sarcasm. 🙂

I also find great enjoyment of the fact that you label yourself, “very experienced” on the index.

I love this: “Currently I am looking for other photographers in the tristate area to connect with and second shoot/assistant for at weddings and other events. ”

So, you’ve broke 6 figures in your first year, but — you’d like to be a 2nd shooter/assistant.. That sounds reasonable..

Haha, yes — and because of your last statement, we all indeed, know who the “fake is”. You have hereby been weighed, measured, and found wanting.

I simply love how devastated you are that you simply cannot take simple rhetoric towards consumer level lenses. It’s highly ironic that we (all mostly), had nothing bad to say about your work.. And to no end, defended you initially.

“12k”, I will assume, that if someone paid you 12k for your level of expertise of 1 year and your choice of equipment — You must’ve slipped them a roofie.

..Honestly, I will reply with a LOL. And, that is all after this point. You’ve unequivocally just proven beyond a reasonable doubt, you belong in the same category as the folks on the front page.  6 figures from entry to where your at now? In 1 year? HAHAHA. 12K on one project? Lmao

Dude–I’m going to start circulating you in all the pro-communities I can think of.. I will love to hear the responses this will incite.

honestly not sure how well this would work — I would assume you’d require one that has some sort of corrective glass..

what’s actually funny is–even though it’s wrinkled and it’s a sheet; could’ve moved subject and “props” away from said sheet, opened the aperture and dropped it oof.. Person taking photo should’ve got on a more level plane with subject, reflector off to the side and a fill flash with umbrella at a 45 .. lol.. just sayin’, you don’t really need expensive backdrops.. unless you want them in-focus like muslin backdrops.. shitty wrinkled solid color backdrops can be used if your technical ability allows it..

oh, there’s purple fringing in the foliage.. lol

I can’t tell if there’s any sky; it’s blown out, but that mountain with a nice sky with some clouds would’ve made that photo spectacular given everything else were corrected..

sensor dust madness  in that one..not to mention the high iso noise.. Probably shot in auto or something

the bridge photo could’ve been extremely nice if it weren’t for that “diffuse” glow.. Personally, I would’ve shot from center of the bridge–but I see why they didn’t.. The lens wasn’t wide enough to get the entire structure into the frame without clipping the end of it.. Which tells me, they didn’t have the right gear.. I also would’ve exposed the sky and used flash for fill on the “subjects” and darkened my ambient about a stop and a half.  There again, I would’ve used a lens that would encompass the entire frame without the odd angle to allow for a symmetric leading line–leading to the subject, and filled the entire frame with the structure. Also, I know some people like that bright blown out look, I’m not one of those people. I prefer to clearly define my subject as the point of main interest and make everything else subtle. If my subject is a rock in the company of a thousand other rocks.. I want my rock to POP and stand out as clearly as possible. That photo has too much subject matter.. the DOF on the building is odd because the angle of the camera/lens so it’s falling out of focus on a horizontal plane..
