How well the 5d3 manages noise at high iso is one of the major selling points of the 5d3, how you haven’t heard or read reviews on that yet, I don’t know. As far as ‘recomposing shots’, goes.. I have to recompose with my 1dx which is after taxes more than 7 thousand dollars. If you spend all day switching AF points (where there’s 61 of them), you’ll be wasting a lot of time.

dont.careParticipantAs far as the 1200 5.6, I’d rather just get the 800 with a 2x extender.. You’ll save 90 grand, and gain 400mm, or on a 1.6 crop body and achieve 2560mm equivalent.. Now, I know you can come back and say, ‘”Hey, well, I can take the 1200 and a 2x and achieve 2400; 3840mm on a crop.” I rebut that with, you’re still spending close to $100,000..
dont.careParticipantThe only reason(s) I upgraded was the ISO performance and AF. I don’t mean to say, ‘ONLY’.. Those are quite substantial upgrades.. The AF system alone in the 5d3 is a magical wonder. I’ve definitely noticed an increase of keepers, especially in AI servo mode. So much faster. Not to mention the flawless interoperability between the 5d3 and 1dx (2012+ era cameras) on the 600 EX RT flash system.. The high ISO low noise is brilliant. Low light is absolutely not a concern now. Whereas my 5d II, I’d get nervous having to shoot @ 3,200, now I can pump it up way beyond that and not really have to fear severe IQ degradation..
I’m pretty enamoured with them at this point.. Although like all things, they’ll be replaced too.. Something else shall be released and they will go on the selling block. 😀
my $0.02
dont.careParticipantThat’s an interesting way to look at it, “become a PI”.. That’d certainly pay for itself quickly. Although, I’d go for the 600 😛
dont.careParticipantWell, you could always upgrade for the added mp and high iso/low noise benefits these days.
dont.careParticipantJC, I know a father who bought a 300mm 2.8 for his kid’s games (incl. 2x extender) mounted to a rebel.. While I’m not sure what else he uses it for, I’m sure it doesn’t make him money
nesgram, The 1dx is a beast, but you don’t necessarily have to use it on high speed continuous running through the wedding like the paparazzi. I have 2 5d3’s in my kit as well, so I’m not limited to this or that.
I opted for the 1DX because I want to get into wildlife and birding. But, I generally use all my bodies when I do an event to have my “preferred lenses” already mounted… Whether it be primes or zooms, it keeps the lens changing down.

dont.careParticipantI guess I forgot to mention the severely under exposed images that seem like they were shot through a car window ?
dont.careParticipantI think if you’re going to buy kit; save your pennies and get the pro gear. You’ll be safer in a multitude of varying environments without having to worry about the small things and you can focus on the ‘big picture’ (pun intended). 😉 I recently got rid of my 5d II and my 1ds III and used the money recovered from those to go toward a 1dx.. The 1dx and 70-200 is weather sealed, while not perfect, it’s certainly better than a Consumer grade DSLR that would die if brought out UNDER a rain cloud.
Now, I know you guys are going to say, “well not everyone can” blah. Save your money. When I first started in photography, I had 2 jobs. One to support my ever growing family, and one to support my habit. 😉 I also have a supportive wife, so that helps.
It sucks, and it takes a little longer.. But it’s more rewarding once you have your dream kit assembled.
dont.careParticipantI couldn’t begin to say how much I’ve spent on gear. It actually grew out of an actual necessity into an addiction. I have just about every lens canon makes with an L designation aside from the “super telephotos”, i.e. the 200 f/2 and up.. 😐 I was in a camera shop one day and this older fella said, “Once it takes hold of you, you’ll never shake it!”
dont.careParticipantRicky Cain sells that shit?
He must change lenses in dust storms.. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that much sensor dust. I realize f/22-f/32 can show dust on the cleanest of sensors, but that’s quite a substantial amount on his!
What’s up with the exposure? It’s like a boosted highlight with no tonal contrast.. It’d still be severely over-exposed, but, wtf?
Crooked horizon!
Bad vignettes!
This guy should write a book on shit to avoid.
