TJH if you are using Flickr..Click on the HTML tab of the reply  and then get the link from flickr and post. (make sure you click the HTML tab first before you paste your link or it won’t work.) Took me a bit to figure it out. Good luck.

Yeah my practice shots are just that practice shots, because I want to learn and most of those shots are of mundane things. Like these are a couple of practice shots from the other day where I had read up on DOF and manual focus and I wanted to try and apply what I learned and these were the results.

I just look at the photogs usually when they say oh it was just for practice like “uh huh…Well then all your shots must be just practice then.”

I love his work. He often gives really helpful tips on the Nat geo website. I have been implementing some of his tips when I go out and practice. Right now I am working on DOF and and manual focus and  he had a great tutorial about it on Nat Geo’s website.

I remember those. My grandma actually had one. She got it when I was in High school. I have shot with an old canon film camera but that was way back when I was in the 10th grade and I took radio/television and journalism. I used it a few times. I just don’t remember exactly which model it was.

Oh trust me I know what a canon power shot A510 is. My grandmother in law has one. I started out with a compact HP point and shoot and then got a fujifilm finepix s700 and now I have a Fuji Finepix HS20 EXR. Over the next year or so I want to rent a few different DSLRs and Lens and expierment with them to see which ones I like best before I decide on which one to buy. I don’t want to drop major bucks on a camera and decide I don’t like how it feels in my hands.

We are prior military and we would see Fauxtogs everywhere. While I do eventually want to upgrade my camera to a DSLR, I want to learn everything I can about photography first with the camera that I have. While it isn’t a DSLR, it isn’t exactly your cheap 100 dollar point and shoot. It actually has a lot of the same settings and controls as a DSLR with a few minor tweeks. Like my camera has non interchangeable lense , but it does have a manual zoom and focus on the lense barrel like most DSLR’s. It also has a selecter wheel on top to adjust things like apature and shutter speeds and iso. In full manual mode I use that wheel and a few buttons on top of my camera and along the side of the LCD screen to change my apatures, speeds, ISO and adjust my white balance. With all of these options I feel it is a good camera to learn the basics and perfect them before I get a DSLR. And even after I upgrade to a DSLR I want learn everything I can with it before I ever even concider charging others for my photography. Which I don’t see happening for at least another 10 to 15 years from now. Also I would personally invest my money into better equipment waaayyyyy before I would invest in props, but then again the type of photography I like doing I really don’t need props because there are no humans involved. LOL

    If ya’ll hadn’t noticed I have a thing for B&W.

But I do see what ya’ll are saying about the focus. It is soft on his face. Not what I was aiming for. What I was aiming for is what a pp said about him being deep in thought thinking about his son while the world went on around him. I think what I should have done was zoomed out just a bit, focused on him more and blurred the background a bit…Or no?

The only thing I did to this pic was adjusted the brightness and contrast on it. This was taken back in June before I really started getting into the nitty gritty of learning my photography. Here is the original.

Yeah that would irk me too. I want to take some college courses for photography just because I want to learn more about it. Not to go out and charge people for it. I want to major in Physical and Occupational Therapy.  Yes photography is a passion of mine (but as a hobby and not a career) but so is helping others.

Hahah that is funny intuition. It does kinda look that way. It is funny because these pics were taken on the same day about 3 years ago in NC. It had started snowing and our tan cat had been outside and wanted in and then the Black one just jumped on the window ledge to watch the snow fall. They were taken with my old camera before I had a grasp on some photography basics. I still like how they came out though.

Oh and thanks for the critiques. I am learning a lot. 🙂 I love the old timey feel of this picture and that is what I was going for when I shot it.

Yeah Aviary isn’t a very good editing software it is just what I have at the moment. It doesn’t allow for selective lightening. That I why I want to get Photoshop. This payday I think I am actually going to invest in Photoshop or lightroom.  What you pointed out was one of my biggest issues with the edit that I did. It blew out the background when I was really just going for her face and body.

Yeah the angle I was at when I took the shot I accidently cut out the corner. I was so focused on lining the fire escape for following the rule of thirds I forgot to angle my camera more to the left. If I had angled it a tad more to the left it would have been perfect i think.  I want to go back to this building and take more shots. It was right at sunset so I was losing my light. I am proud of myself though because I took the shot in apature priority mode with manual focus.
