You are well on your way to becoming a great photographer! But there are little things like missed focus in a couple of them, the one with the girl in the field has her face hidden by the grass, which ruins an otherwise great shot; the placement of the hand on the B&W portrait is distracting, and the one with the girl on the bridge was shot in very harsh light. You definitely have a good eye for catching your subjects emotion and interaction with one another, but there are little things here and there that hold the shots back from being really great. Keep at it!

@faux-fighters- It just makes me incredibly irritated that she is taking money from people in exchange for that trash. But, chances are fauxs like her will only be in business for a year or two before it eventually peters out. It’s obvious people like this aren’t in it for the long haul and have no real love for photography, or else they would have more skill and experience before they start charging. They go straight into it purely to make money and have no intention of reading books, looking at other photographers’ work, taking classes, etc. This is what I have to tell myself whenever I start getting frustrated that people like this are earning money, when I have never earned a dime from my work. (not that I’m in business, either).

On a lighter note, I don’t think I could possibly get my P&S to take as many blurry photos (especially with flash) as these people do. That in itself is a talent, as far as I’m concerned.

I’ve compiled a master list of shots every self respecting fauxtographer should have in his/her portfolio…errr..I mean fb page.

    1. “studio” shots strictly with on-camera flash only. (shitty wrinkled backdrop is a must.) Studio shots must include: jaundiced 2 day old infants in tu-tus and gaudy headbands in precarious positions, gross maternity shots with expectant mother revealing her belly button ring adorned abdomen. (+ or- tatted up baby daddy), nasty out of focus boudoir shots with overweight, middle-aged women holding a rose while lounging on a cracked leather sofa (bonus points for selective coloring the rose.).

    2. Railroad tracks. Mother freaking railroad tracks. Anything goes this this. You can have your newborn out there in the middle, sitting in a bucket or something, or maybe do your maternity shots with the god-awful heart hands over the belly,  the tracks are very versatile and are a hallmark sign of a great fauxtographer.

    2. Kids sittin in the woods. Out of focus? yep. Shot at 1pm? Pssshhh! Is there any OTHER time to photograph someone outdoors? Clothing should be as distracting as possible, with name brands proudly displayed all over. Alternately, hunting camo is acceptable, as well. And, it goes without saying, every shot should appear as if it were taken with an elph P&S, whether it was or not. Strike that, make that my Nokia cell phone camera I had in 2003.

I know I’m probably missing some very important steps, but these are just a jumping off point.

Well, I think we can all agree that the histogram will never flash “proper exposure” on the lcd screen. All it is is a guide to base your decision off of. I think you two are arguing the same argument.

Is it me, or does it seem as if the size and intricacy of the watermark is inversely proportional to the quality of the photo? I don’t think I’ve every seen a great photo with one of those frilly flowery watermarks.

As long as you end up with the SS/aperture/ISO combination that allows for the desired exposure and depth of field, it does not matter what mode you used to get there. Granted, there could be more efficient/quicker ways of getting there.

These shots are OK. Definitely some skin tone issues on a lot of the outdoor portraits (green cast), some focus issues on some of them. There were a couple that had blown highlights in the background and on the subject. For example: http://brejohnsonphotography.com/portraits/#jp-carousel-554

Dutch angle shots are to be used with a specific purpose, and preferably with no horizon in the background. http://brejohnsonphotography.com/seniors/#jp-carousel-330

I also noticed about 99% of the portraits are centered, with very little use of the rule of thirds. And a lot of them have way too much head room for no apparent reason.

You do have about 4 shots that I would say are a step above the rest, like this: http://brejohnsonphotography.com/portraits/#jp-carousel-561

Also, on a side note, asking for likes on your page on a forum such as this is a bit umm… forward.

Definitely not a fauxtog. One thing I would recommend is to not leave so much head room in your portraits- the guideline is to have the eyes in the upper third of the frame unless you have a good reason for not composing it like this. Overall, good work!

Here she is in action! Why the F would you post that on your page?

And why would you want the name of your business to have a connotation with “two girls, one cup”? I guess these are questions we mortals should not try to answer 😛

Another nitpick- The diamond isn’t in focus in the shot with the rings. That’s arguably the most important part of the shot. And looking at the two boudoir shots, I actually prefer the one without flash. I think you’re right- the flash essentially flattened out the lighting, which made it feel more sterile. I would maybe just use a reflector instead of flash to bring up the shadows just a hair.

HDR stands for high dynamic range. As such, it’s meant for scenes that have too much dynamic range for the camera to capture. When used appropriately, it can take a photo to a whole other level. Some of the best landscapes I’ve seen are HDR. It’s when people use HDR indiscriminately and with zero skill, do you see the halos, crazy saturation and black clouds. It’s not all bad.

I second the Grid. I spent most of my weekend watching episodes online- I love the critique episodes.
