cass335Participant
I enjoy Kyle Thompson’s photography. Saw him featured on Yahoo’s main page a couple years ago and I thought his stuff was super unique. He has only been shooting for 2 years. Plus I love that the majority of his stuff is self-portrait work.
Here is his page: http://www.kylethompsonphotography.com/
and his flickr page (it has more of the surreal stuff): http://www.flickr.com/photos/kyle_thompson/
cass335Participant@iliketag: The best response to handle that is: Each wedding is different and I decide pricing based upon what I am expected to shoot for the day. I would be happy to discuss your day and your expectations for photographs, and then decide a price. I will completely understand if you decide that my pricing does not work for you and that you want to choose another photographer.
As for shooting for friends, I won’t discount my wedding prices, but I do discount family photos. Weddings are just too long of a day to do as a gift for a friend. Family I don’t mind helping out for weddings, because I make it clear that at some point (after the important shots) I am going to put my camera down and enjoy the reception.
Nothing about this shot works…def not the tone…and the poor girl looks really uncomfortable:
cass335ParticipantI shot my sisters wedding for free, and in october I am doing my other sisters wedding for free. But, both of them are broke and so I volunteered. Plus, I don’t think I could sit there and watch a Faux mess up their wedding day. Though I did tell them they both owe me tons of free baby-sitting as payment for my services. Lol.
As for this faux….seriously my 8 year old knows how to change the lenses on my camera…its NOT that hard! Wow….
cass335ParticipantWCS: I will have to keep that in mind. Fortunately, I haven’t had to deal with that much. Though I have no doubt it’ll happen again. We just did a bridal show, and one bride I talked to said her mother-in-law was their photographer. Well…she happened to be there with the bride. I asked her how she liked shooting weddings. She said she had only done 5 or 6, but was getting better at it. She told me she had just bought her first professional camera. I asked her what it was, and her response: “Of course you would ask me that. Honestly I can’t remember, but I know I spent like $2,500 on it. And it came with 2 lenses!” I did my best to not roll my eyes at that response. I asked if she knew if it was Nikon or Canon and she said “Oh it’s Nikon, that I do know.”
All I could think was “oh boy…another one”. I can’t tell you how often I hear “my family friend/uncle/cousin/whatever is a photographer, from people at bridal shows. My response is always the same. I smile politely and say: “Well congratulations on your engagement and I wish you the best of luck with your wedding.” Which translates to: boy I sure hope you don’t get sh***y pics!
nesgran: LOL!
cass335ParticipantYea I know you’re right. But it was a close friend of the groom, and i just prefered to not make waves. So i kust worked around him. I guess I am just too nice of a person some times. That’s one area I have to work on.
cass335ParticipantWow…anyone wanna share my popcorn??
Anyways, back to the original purpose of this thread…
I have seen other posts on here similar to this edit job….is this some new fad?
What….
This shot cracks me up (and not in a good way):
Thos blurry people in the background ruined this leaves photo… (and yes…its a private fb profile, but he was advertising on craigslist using this as his contact page)

cass335Participantcass335ParticipantUmm…odd place for someones head.
Based on this poor little one’s hand position I would assume it isn’t a composite. I feel really bad for this baby!
cass335ParticipantJust at a quick glance here are my first thoughts.
The first 4 have that “instagram” look. I really don’t care for it.
I don’t find the kite image interesting, it’s plain.
“Hannah 13” Not a good background, don’t like her hair over her face
Hannah 12: overexposed background, bad angle makes her look short.
Hannah 11: Bad expression on her face…she looks like she blinked as you took the photo. Don’t like where she is placed in the photo.
Hannah 10: Lens flair on her shoulder, not sure what’s going on with her hand, looks like you snapped it in the middle of her posing.
Hannah 9: Like her face and smile, seems a little dark. Would have cropped in tighter on her face.
Hannah 8: Cute, would have liked it better if you would have cropped below the sky. The sun is distracting and draws my eyes to it.
Hannah 7: Squatting is a no-no. IMO it always looks like they are having a bathroom break…
Hannah 6: She kinda has crazy eyes here, like she opened them wider than normal.
Hannah 5: Not sure what is going on with her eye the darkness makes it look weird…also looks like you over exposed and then tried to fix the highlights…resulting in greyish tones with no detail
Hannah 4: Cute expression. Her legs look orange, and she has a tree growing out of her head. If the background was blurred more it would have helped that. Shooting at a longer focal length would have made the background look better
Hannah 3: One of your better images. I like the catch-lights in her eyes. Maybe crop a little off the left to put her more on the thirds line.
Hannah 2: Background looks better on this one. Hand across stomach is awkward.
Hannah 1: My eye is drawn to the bright part of the rock. Bent elbow and hand look awkward.
Ane’s Feet: Just a strange shot overall.
cake shot: Too shallow DOF, too dark, uninteresting
Sweet Ane: bad lighting. I really really dislike wrinkled backgrounds!
Smashing and dashing: Bad lighting, bad background
Ane cake smash: Bad lighting, bad background, not a fan of messy mouth closs-ups
Ane: Bad background, bad lighting, weird angle
Dad: not terrible lighting, his expression is odd.
Sunset: Nothing interesting just looks like a snapshot taken with a cell phone.
img_6084: better image. 30mm is not a good focal length for portraits. Try 50-70mm at that type of crop.
img_6120: Looks like a snapshot, bad background
img_6046: background too busy, not an awesome BW conversion
img_6036: Better image. Wish there was a little more space above her head. same comment about focal length.
Like I said…just a quick glance at each. I am sure someone will give you a much more in depth critique.

cass335ParticipantIt could be just me but “Maybe that’s all she needed was some bling, bling & a sexy skirt to rock that body.” Should not be said on the photo of a One year old. (I’m guessing the age).
cass335ParticipantLittle Photo Sleuth is no more. Their blog shut down about a month or more ago.
cass335Participantiliketag: At first I was pretty against taking on anyone. But what I have found neat about it is that I have realized how far I have come in photography since I started. Its a pretty cool feeling.
It would be neat to audit the class, however I definitely don’t have the time or the money for that. I would have to drive over 2 hours to get to it. I have 2 jobs, and 2 kids so its just not possible. I do believe that probably about 50% of the problem is her, and I would give the instructor 50%. IMHO an instructor of photography should be able to critique an image and tell a student how to improve. When I took classes at my community college, my instructors were really awesome and my lighting class was 100% hands-on. We never opened a book. It really helped the information sink in better for me because I am a hands-on type of person. I wish she could come here and take one of the classes here. I also wish she had a facebook page so I could get her involved with a couple of the photography groups I am part of. I think she would really benefit from it. Might have to tell her to get one.
cass335ParticipantI don’t think it is a student problem. She said she would get frustrated with her instructor because he would glance at the photos and say nice job, not offering critiques of what could be improved unless she specifically asked. She also said the school had a lighting kit for them to check out but they weren’t allowed to use it outdoors. And if they did they got a lecture and weren’t allowed to check it out again. She definitely has the drive to learn, which I think is great. It makes me have hope for her. She isn’t the type who just picks up a camera and thinks she is awesome. I figured she would observe during the ceremony and then go around to tables and get guest shots at the reception. Yes, there would definitely be a strict set of rules. And I chose this wedding because I know the type of setting would be relaxed enough. Its not going to be a full catholic mass or anything. It’s a small wedding at their home. Plus it is outdoors so no weird lighting. I would invite her over to my house to play around with some of my lighting equipment, but she lives an hour and a half away so it just isn’t possible.
cass335ParticipantThis photographer offers “Face Sculpting”
“You can receive a more realistic looking photo by having us remove the phantom pounds added by the camera. Town square Photo can then glamorize and soften the photos. The mother in the photo below required little attention but we enhanced the eyes, removed the phantom pounds added by the camera and increased the color slightly.”
http://www.townsquarephoto.com/facesculptingand-photoediting.html
Yup! Fake eyes, and plastic doll skin is way more realistic!’
The thing is…they aren’t like a “fauxtographer” disaster. They have potential to be good. But then they go and offer the “Face Sculpting”
cass335ParticipantAwful vignette and…well…everything else. Why have a little girl “showing off” her leg?? IMO its an inappropriate pose…
