@iliketag    I thought it was just me with those compression issues, god knows how they managed that. I whole heartedly agree with you about paying money for nothing!

I came across this in the free ads (UK) just now and had to share it.   Check out the testimonial from Kelly, made me cringe!

Look at the comments…Kentucky what now? No offence to any decent people who might live there but there’s only one good thing that comes from Kentucky. The Colonels amazing secret blend of 11 herbs and spices! (Yeah I live in the UK so it rocks here!)

I think we need to find out whos page this image is on and actually abuse them as they seem to think that holding a defenseless bunny like that is normal behavior, f*cking d*cks!

I saw BEGs post about this the other day and found it….interesting. I have never used, nor do I intend to right now, live animals in a photo shoot but I’m almost positive that the same laws do not apply here in the UK. I would look it up, but as I have no need to I wont, haha

Collaborate, no. Her work is real bad in my opinion, yours is light years ahead. As soon as I saw your site I recognised the pictures on it, I don’t know how I got there before but I did. Surely that’s a good sign that someone remembers your work subconsciously! It was probably the Pug that grabbed my attention first to be honest but that’s simply because I love pugs! I have a Shih Tzu due to the Mrs having the final say  :o(  lol.

Anyways, I’ve had a similar thing happen to me recently. I don’t want to post details as the tog is a friend of a friend and I don’t want to cause a rift but he said that if I wanted to shoot with him sometime to give him a shout. I pretty much replied whilst avoiding the suggestion altogether. I’d love to out the guy on here….maybe I will someday but not right now. He charges, or at least tries to (funny story), for his images and they are nothing more than shots with no technical knowledge and just over edited.  Ooooh I’m so tempted to link to him….maybe later

    @ don.care

When I say “starting a business” I mean just that. I don’t have a steady stream of clients and I definitely do not intend to quit my 37 hour a week civil servant job, it’s secure and pays the bills to keep the roof over my head. I’m 27 so not far off your age either. I’m not currently semi pro, I would LIKE to be semi pro. This would technically be correct (as discussed in the other post, lol) as I would hopefully be making extra money, not all of it. Semi profession so to speak.

That said, your advice, or real life take, seems spot on to me. I don’t expect things to be easy. The Mrs already gets a bit peeved when I come home from a shoot and then sit at the PC for the rest of the day editing and social networking my images. And she is the one who wants me to do it….women eh. Like most people, they don’t understand how much work is involved, hahaha.

This probably would make more sense to someone living in the UK as I said the laws and red tape will be different. But thanks all the same for your post, much appreciated  :o)

First off I have to agee with @Fauxfighters,  some nice looking ladies there!
Secondly, you are definitely not a Fauxtographer as you have said “I know I am no where near real photographer status yet” and you are not charging for work, so no worries there my friend. One of the things I really like (and which also negates you from fauxtogradom in my book) is that you haven’t photoshopped the crap out of your images with stupid effects and what not.

I’m going to try and be constructive here because from what I’ve seen, I feel like you will learn this as you progress through your journey. I don’t think many of us here can say we never took shots similar to some of the ones you have when we first picked up a DSLR. If no one else admits it, I will openly say it now. Birds, flowers, sunsets, it’s all there and you will only get better!

I do have a couple of pointers:

    http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=505063056187323&set=a.505051682855127.133362.495922100434752&type=3&theater

On the above image you say “Okay now I have my exposure and shutter speed figured out” – To me this says 2 things (this is assuming that flashes/studio stobes were used). You are unsure of correct exposure, and you seem unsure of what shutter speed does when using strobes. Which is to say, shutter does nothing at all to affect the light coming from the flash (unless your go over your sync speed, in which case the flash will not show at all in the image).

    http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=535765513117077&set=a.505051682855127.133362.495922100434752&type=3&theater

This link above here is, I would agree with Fauxfighters again, your best lit shot. THIS is much more like correct exposure in my opinion. To be honest, if the model was off to one side instead of dead centre, I would go as far as to say it was a really decent image  🙂

    So here are my suggestions.

Next time you get to use studio flashes try this.  Set your camera to Manual if you aren’t already doing so. Use ISO 100 (or the lowest available). Set shutter speed to its maximum flash sync speed (usually 1/200th or 1/250th of a second and LEAVE IT THERE.  Set the flashes to say 1/4 to 1/2 of their total power output and set your aperture to it’s lowest value for the lens you are using (say f3.5). Take a shot, review it on your camera and turn the histogram on to check for flashing highlights (blown out). Increase the aperture by maybe 1 stop (turn your dial 3 clicks usually as most DSLRs are set at 1/3 stop increments). So say you started at f3.5 on a kit lens, increase the number to f5.0. Take another shot and check on the back of your camera again. Use the histogram again to check for blown highlights. Continue this process until your exposure looks correct and your histogram shows minor, or no blown out areas.

Depending on the flashes being used, you may need more or less power than suggested but you have to start somewhere. If you follow that advice and your first shot is too dark, turn the flash power up to full and try again. If it’s still dark, move the flash closer to your subject. If its STILL dark, increase your ISO. But  ALWAYS ALWAYS leave your shutter speed alone if you are working in a studio with a white background.

You will need to learn how to use shutter speed with flash outdoors, but you can do that when you understand how aperture controls the flash exposure on your subject.

I think that would be a good place for you to start learning about flash control and correct exposure in a practical sense. Another tip is to decrease the brightness on your cameras rear screen. These aren’t the best for reviewing photos, we all know that, but you have to use it so try to calibrate it so that you cause yourself as few problems as possible when reviewing photos. Brighter screen = Making you think the image is brighter than it actually is.

Hopefully, when you understand what the correct exposure looks like, this will transfer into getting the correct exposure in ambient light too.

I apologise if you already know this but it’s still a good place to go back to and work on your technique. It took me a long time to understand how to use flash correctly but this website   http://strobist.blogspot.co.uk/       helped me a whole bunch.

Good luck, let us know how you get on if you do try a few pratices of this kind   🙂

    @ dont.care

I love that line “My photoshop is as naked as a 2 dollar whore on friday night at the local military barracks”. I LOL’d a bit there, haha.

Personally I don’t own PS (again as I simply cannot afford it and I would need 10 of my current PCs to get it to run) so I use GIMP which is great IMO. I use Lightroom 3 on 100% of my RAW images first and only use GIMP if I have to merge layers etc (you know the score).
I agree with the opinion on presets. They are there in LR but I very, VERY rarely use them. I will do a quick scan if I think something will work with a particular image, if it does, I use it and tweak it as should be done. Other than that I save my own presets which have worked on previous images and try those out but again I always change them from their full preset.
I suppose that’s another thing fauxs do, choose a preset….uh…preset, and whack it on all of their images without changing a damn thing. I can honestly say I have never done that other than in Instagram when I take pictures on my tablet, lol.

    @ cameraclicker

It is sad indeed. Also, I know this isn’t about how good people are at making websites but that sucks big time too! lol

    @ browneyedgirl

Nice to finally be able to reply to you, long time fan, haha. I think I must have seen all of your posts here at YANAP.  :op

I totally agree with your lower paragraph. I’ve said this to people I work with and clients, “I don’t do cheesy poses like hanging babies in trees or stuffing them in flower vases or sweet (candy for you American and Canadian folk) jars. A baby is beautiful enough in its own skin, I’m sure you will agree”.  And I really have said that, I may actually have lost a paying customer due to that….ah well, at least I have my integrity, hahaha
