I think I shot this with my softbox off to the left. No backdrop, just 6 feet away from my kitchen wall. I KNOW it’s rather blown out on my forehead, I was practicing and I’m not looking for a critique. I’m pretty sure I had to boost the light in my right eye in post too. But I likes my face so I used it (it’s my avatar here). Anyway, try doing something stupid with yourself like this…but with better light than me obviously.

@ Snaphappy – So I just went back to faller and had a proper look through the wedding gallery. I agree, there are some nasty images in this. As BEG said, missed focus etc. I wouldn’t trust them, or want them, to do my wedding. BUT, they seem to have a grasp of what they are doing and this is the “Fauxtogs who should end up on the main page” topic. Looks like they have made some bad choices of which images to showcase but a few bad images doth not a fauxtog make. BEG again summed it up with “inconsistency is weird”. The orange one with the flare coming down is just plain bad, why they chose to use that is a mystery.

So I apologise if I came across wrong but I still wouldn’t call them a Fauxtog.  How are the crazy pills, I’ve run out……LOL (That’s a joke the way!)

    Hey bitches, I’m baaaaccckkk…

Of course I had to see what had become of this thread, plus the latest temptation of “Diarrhea Wall” was too much to bare (I do still enjoy REAL fauxtogs work). It’s refreshing to see that so many of you get where I’m coming from with this topic. I am not for one minute saying that genuine critique is a bad thing, if you ask for it you should expect it. Some of you have pretty much summed it up nicely here already.

Ebi, I don’t know you, will never meet you and I don’t wish to. I don’t care who you are, who you think you are, or how you act in real life. The fact of the matter is that you come across as a troll on this website (in my personal opinion) and that’s all that matters. Some of you don’t agree, some of you apparently do. We have all seen it here before, the guy who got a genuine critique and started attacking everyone. Names were called, swearing (cussing) ensued, and everyone turned against him. He wasn’t that bad a photographer but he came on here acting like a cock and that was all that mattered in the end. You don’t “say it like it is” at all. You’re personal opinions are not fact, they are just that, personal opinions. A critique is not the same as being a critic or a know it all. Honestly, the images that you comment on are not perfect, but they are far better than you make them out to be.

I would probably quite enjoy your contribution to this site if you targeted the aggressive opinions towards the actual Fauxtogs instead of the people here who are trying to really learn and improve. There are no 2 ways about it, you bully and intimidate people who ask for help, and those who give positive responses about it. Using the words “Saying it how it is”, is not an excuse for acting like a twat. And the “pity party” comment, well that just adds fuel to the fire doesn’t it. Any excuse to be a smart arse.

Good day sir, I’ll see you on the cover of Time Magazine when they announce you as Photographer of the millennium….

She has clearly just bought a camera, used some sort of editing program and now thinks she’s a photographer! WTF!!! Seriously….WTF!! What runs through these peoples minds. This totally screams FAUX on all levels. Amongst the small selection of images of….each other…they even have the obligatory train track shots. I seriously think this is a joke right….guys…it’s a joke yeah?

@ Cameraclicker   –  I see what you mean now, reflections on the centre of the leg of the stand facing the camera. I was looking along the top edge of the stand just under the projector where there are scattered highlights. Definitely ON camera flash, I was assuming it would be off camera if anything which was confusing me a little. In that case…

    @Aevey
    – Try to get that flash off camera ASAP, you will enjoy it I promise.

EDIT – The blacks still have a lot of noise though, that I can’t figure out. other than PP

I just remembered why I haven’t commented on these forums in a while. Some of you really do make photographers look like a pretentious bunch of pricks!

That said;  My main observation of the cornfield images is that the blacks on the camera in her hand & the guys jeans have LOADS of noise. It’s making me wonder if flash was even used in these shots and that the shadows weren’t just brought up in lightroom with an adjustment brush. I use a fair bit of OCF in my work and these just don’t seem quite right to me. That’s not to say it’s done wrongly, I’m just not sure what to make of it… The reflections on the projector table don’t look like reflections of a flash to me. It seems like it’s the same reason there is a spot of light on the girls leg, it’s just the sun coming through the corn and hitting edges…I don’t know, just observations.

I’ve nothing much to say with regards to a critique as I quite like most of them (apart from the chopped head on the rider, mentioned above). This one though   http://society6.com/EmilyHoefman/Graze-0Bd_Print   had me staring for a good minute. It could so easily have been a kid aiming the camera incorrectly but I found it interesting trying to figure out exactly what was there, which end was which etc. Although I know it’s a horse, my immediate thoughts were “boulders”, “landscape”, “distorted mountain”  and things along those lines.  Overall I’m thinking you’re doing a pretty good job.

EDIT – http://society6.com/EmilyHoefman/Rollback_Print   I like this idea too, I can’t help thinking I’d prefer all 4 legs in the shot though.

EDIT 2 – http://society6.com/EmilyHoefman/After-The-Races_Print   I actually want this on my office wall!

I mostly agree with what you are saying Nesgran, you should try to at least blend in and look professional depending on what event you are covering. If I shoot something fancy like a party, wedding etc, I tend to wear at least a shirt and trousers (pants/slacks?? for the USA folk). However, I feel the heat a lot, even in winter. Last wedding I did I had to start with my sleeves rolled up or I knew I’d be in trouble. It’s a trade off, as long as you look like you made the effort I think everyone should understand that you are doing a job which involves a lot of maneuvering and running around (this shit aint as easy as we make it look eh, haha). As CC said, I would never wear a jacket or suitas  I have large shoulders and struggle to move my upper body in a jacket at the best of times. Personally I think if I was doing something like a school leavers ball I’d either stick with my usual combo or wear jeans and polo shirt. Possibly with my company branding on it.

@ Mimion – The first 2 there are pretty horrendous I must admit. The guy from Switzerland has some really decent images for what he does. He has let himself down with the weird thermal camera effects on duplicates of the images.   www.mypictureart.com/Dominique_imagepages/1.htm

Other than that he does have knowledge of what he is doing by the look of it.

    @ EVERYONE

Haven’t been on in a bit so had some catching up to do and there are some cracking links posted. “Refraction of Satans face” – ….wow. Now I haven’t personally checked if she charges, because I can’t be bothered, but if she does then …wow…just wow.

@Electronic  –  Really? How many times are we going to go over this. I visited this site a lot before I joined and never saw things that didn’t really deserve to be on here. That German tog certainly doesn’t deserve a place here. Most people on the front pages DONT know what they are doing, hence they end up there. If you can’t tell the difference between someone who does know, and someone who doesn’t know what they are doing then you shouldn’t post here.

Way to not answer the question everyone! As much as I like laughing at real Fauxs who end up on here it does annoy me that sometimes questions can’t just be answered with more positive advice. Lets assume the bride and groom know that the OP doesn’t shoot weddings very often, have seen weddings they have already shot and liked the image so they hired her. Although the advice given is fairly sound, it’s rather negative so lets try something else…

On that note, tips for the day. HIGH ISO if needed, blurry shots are worse than noisy shots which can be fixed in post. Please have at least one fast lens, go buy a sub £100 (not sure how many $$$) 50mm f/1.8 if you don’t already own one. Shoot in aperture priority if you can’t keep up with changing aperture and shutter speed all the time, there is no shame in letting the camera do the work it was designed to do. Take control! If they want the posed group shots you need to be in charge. Take LOADS of shots just in case. If you have any time when you aren’t running after people, take some shots of the details if you can. Most of all, have fun and enjoy it. I hated the first wedding I ever did, I was sweating buckets all day due to the stress. I couldn’t take control of the situation and at times felt I didn’t have a clue what I was doing. Thankfully I had explained that I wasn’t good enough to shoot my friends wedding but he insisted as he liked my other work. Turns out they loved all the images but I hate them because I know they are bad, haha.
