IntuitionParticipant
I enjoy the black and white, but here’s the color for comparison.
I will never say no to a critique, and I never discount a critique because of ‘noobie’ status, since I don’t have to paint like Dali to love his work 😉 Plus I market to families, not art majors, so their opinion is just as important, all be it often misguided. The background is totally distracting. She wanted to take pictures with all the tanks and what not, and I was having issues with little kids and giant machines. We have some at a wooded area, but there was no getting them all together at that point. They also were taken at like 1100 am, which I know is horrible but my friend wouldn’t do early morning and i was only in town to visit my husband (who’s at training) and the evening was his. For this picture we did have a scrim up, but you can see the shade fall out on the left kid’s arm in the color more obvious.
IntuitionParticipantThis is probably the best of all three for the whole shoot. and I can’t stand all the cut off fingers ( which is me not watching and a badly chosen angle to try and get a tank in the picture) and what not. -_- http://www.flickr.com/photos/31521328@N04/9576846427/
IntuitionParticipantI don’t have kids, probably why I identify with older kids much better. I used the some silly some serious technique and it usually works for me, but not this time. I think it was the fact that there were three, and this last time they were all 6 and under. the first one that gave me trouble the oldest (my godson) was ten, but autistic. That lends itself to all sorts of issues, but actually the middle child gave me the most grief with mugging for the camera EVERY time haha. It’s just disgruntling 🙁
IntuitionParticipantI know! No horns and tail! Weird, eh! Seriously, I don’t look the way I imagine I do, either. And I don’t recognize the guy in the mirror at all if I shave my beard off. I spent years talking to people on the phone and once in a while I would meet one of them. No one ever looked the way I imagined they would.
Haha I didn’t imagine a horn and tail, I’ve always felt you to be honest here, not hateful or out to get anyone. I don’t think I”ve ever been accurate on how I visualize people to look like by their voices, internet wise or on the phone.
I haven’t seen that add/promotion before I found it pretty fascinating. I am sort of the opposite of the girls, I’m a pretty heavy set lady, who forgets that often haha. In my head I see myself completely different but on the more positive side. I never thought of myself as having very high self esteem, but apparently I’m better off then some.
and to continue the discussion on lighting:
for class we had to do a shoot involving both continuous lights and a strobe. I used a swinging tennis ball to give me a comet shape and it was by far one of the funnest shoots I had. It was just amusing and my first time showing motion, while stopping it too. Lighting painting was my second funnest (yes funnest isn’t a word, but who cares 😉 )IntuitionParticipanttotally not what I was picturing you to look like haha but good post i always enjoy side by side steps to see diff erences. also one handed typing due to a puppy on m y lap/arm
IntuitionParticipantGood grief and it’s ohio state as well. I go to Art institute of pittsburgh online, which I know is shit, but I’ve learned more then her, it says she’s even a senior. wtf
IntuitionParticipantI once mentioned on a pretty popular PS action sellers photo that there was an ackward hand placement in the photo. It was a rather dark toned photo, and the right hand of the model was in the top left and very bright in relation to the rest of the background, also it was only the fingers that where visable, so picture a floating half hand I guess. I don’t know what caused me to mention it, random bug up my arse or something. But I did, saying along the lines of you may want to darken the fingers a tad, they are a little off putting. ( floating random hand you know). and holy cow the butt hurt that came out of that little line. Basically I got a ” I put this image up to share, if I wanted critique I’d ask” in quite a few more words. I ended up unliking the page because of the way it was handled, although really it wasn’t anything newsworthy, but it just sort of shocked me. I guess I liken photography to art a little to much, I assume everyone is critiquing my work.
IntuitionParticipantI heart you I hate Fauxtography. I so Heart you.
IntuitionParticipantRe: intuition “meh, nevermind” do you really think at this point your going to make a difference, this thread will only ever move on and improve if everyone, including myself, moves on and behaves.
i get it, I need a lot of work to improve my photography, the point is well and truely taken, so you can either assist or repeat pushing the already proved point.
Have a nice day.
You need to stop jumping to defensive mode so quick. I wrote a long post, having accidentally skipped page 2 of this thread, and realized everything I had to say had been said. Since we can’t delete posts, I was left with an edited post, and rather then leave it blank I said Meh Nevermind.
Smile, not everyone is out to get you.
IntuitionParticipantmy first note is you need to learn lighting better. The tea party shots are adorable, but the light is really harsh. Either work in better light ( IE mornings, or evening) or start looking at how to manipulate it. There’s a lot of tea party shots out there, where you see them in a stand of trees with like tule ( tool? tulle? I dunno lol) stretched between. The Tulle ( since it isn’t coming up as misspelled) is probably acting as a giant diffuser so they don’t have dappled light across them.
You can buy a 5 in 1 reflector that has a decent diffuser for really harsh light for less then 20 bucks. And you’ll love it. Also a white “picnic blanket” instead of green would have bounced more light into their faces. Photography is all about light 🙂
IntuitionParticipantmeh nevermind
IntuitionParticipantAs long as it’s cute, feel free haha
IntuitionParticipantDstone, I looked at your two photo’s and It took me a minute. I was completely seeing the two pictures as “evil side” and “Good side” of the same cat haha
IntuitionParticipantIntuitionParticipantYea it’s not about brackets. You won’t ever make a living off that. If you had a restaurant you wouldn’t just arbitrarily pick menu prices, you’d pick them from figuring out food and salary costs, and then think about quality and what you think people would pay for the quality of your food. I got my payscale down relatively cheap ( 200 dollars a client x 4 a week) only because we’re military and we have an allotment ( BAH) for housing and what not. So I don’t technically have to worry about making sure I get enough to have a place to live. Without that, I was averaging 600 each client. 200 is also the starting point, what I have to make each time to average out to about 20,000 a year in profits. I can adjust from there. But you have to do this stuff to run ANY successful business. Believe me, I hate all this stuff, i’d much rather just “take pretty Pictures” and be done with it all. lol
I just quickly did the NPAA one IHF linked, and came out with round about the same figures. 197 vs. my 194. This is all without paying for studio space all that, that’s where my business will change and grow. A dedicated studio space outside my home. 🙂 It’s in my 5 year business plan 😉
