    Amen to that, emf.

My sister-in-law is creative director for a top corporate CI firm here in NYC. 30 years back, when she attended F.I.T., her photography course professor required each student turn in a photo as their end-of-year project. Most students shot hundreds of photos, some only 50, and all spent many hours / days poring over them – thinking, comparing, asking others, even going to the MoMA to seek out curators’ opinions.

Fran? Spent all year casually looking for what she thought was the best shot. Only produced 1 photo. Best in the class. A B&W of a guy in a wrinkled suit sitting on a park bench, hands folded in front of him, looking down, clearly contemplating something life-changing. Blows me away even today when I look at it. And I’ve been looking at it for 25 years.

Her camera was a Kodak instamatic. These days it’s her cell phone, and she still produces these mind-blowing images of things that seem to allude me and my 1Dx and L-glass. Oh I can come VERY CLOSE to her images after 7 years and 75,000 photos of practice, but there’s always a difference that makes hers just THAT much better – usually it’s composition.

Ditto… EXCEPT for the Prisoner appears over-worked on the right side of the face. That may just be the B&W effect.

Good stuff. You certainly know how to pull the drama out of a situation  🙂

directly from the Mypornblocke online user manual:

    1.  Install the software

    2. Unplug your computer and all peripherals

    3. Take all the parts with you on a boat

    4. Sail to an area where the depth exceeds 100 meters.

    5. Deposit the entire computer overboard into the water.

    6. The program is now active. Enjoy!

Adding on to the other comments regarding color, I’d say either (a) shoot in jpeg but carry an expodisk to allow for custom WB or (b) shoot in RAW and use Lightroom for WB / tonal / color corrections AND use monitor calibration software like Colormunki.

I can see that these are all practice shots, and that you seem to like bokeh 🙂 Bear in mind, however, that background blur will be add insult to injury if your eye is drawn to a subject which is not tack sharp and properly exposed.

It’s a teen’s Tumblr page – it’ll be gone when the next beer-goggle idea is hatched. About a week.

Thanks for the wonderful advice and kind words.

As it turns out, one of the mothers heard the trepidation in my voice and gently asked if I could recommend anyone else to do the church portraits because “you’re probably so busy already.” She gave me the out I wanted / needed. I told her my pick, and she mentioned the photog will get a call this week.

    Problem solved. 🙂

I have a carbon fiber Manfrotto with a matched Gitzo pistol grip quick-release head and also a Dolicia with a Manfrotto head.

But I don’t use these much. In general, when I need a sturdy surface I print out the spam from this website and the 50 or 60 pages per week provide more-than -adequate support for any of my camera stability needs.

I had time to review only one set of photos, Kinley.

What I noticed straight away is the lack of consistency in white balance. You get this if you shoot in JPEG and leave your camera on auto white balance. A better technique would be to set the WB using a photodisk or some similar device to gain uniform colors across all the shots from the same shoot.

Another thing I noticed was a good deal of photos with lack of sharp focus. You need to lock focus on the eyes – if the eyes are out of focus, the whole photo is lost IMHO.

from the wedding photos I’ve seen recently, yes. Not from everyone of course but an awful lot of them. It seems the brides like the blown-out look I guess. With some photogs even here in NYC charging $500 for a complete wedding, I guess the desire to save money is greater than the perceived value of quality photos.

And, sadly, the 20 and 30 somethings generations see little value in many other services – except if it’s something that has the look-at-me factor, then the sky’s the limit. At least here in NY.

It would appear this is a moot point since you said there was an agreement in place already to photograph the kids.

This may be an opportunity to parade your creative skills – come back with a suggestion of a holiday theme that is not ‘cliche.’ I’m sure you can think of something!

I believe one of the qualities of a good photographer is his / her ability to apply fashionable (timeless) ideas to a trendy situation. For example, my own high school graduation photos were done in the early 80’s when big hair was ‘in’ for girls and gigantic bow-ties for boys (in tuxedos). But our photos in my yearbook are STILL good today because the photographer had the skills to pose everyone properly so your eyes are not drawn to anywhere else but the faces.

not sure if Adobe is still running the promo, but I’ve seen ads in the last few months for Ps & LR CC together (‘photographer bundle’ I think they called it) for $9.99 / mo.

That being said, if you’re not shooting RAW, then Elements is just fine for basic editing.

There are two truths in life.

    (1) it’s not wise to look down the barrel of a gun to see why it’s jammed, and

    (2) don’t make IHF angry.  🙂

    As usual, you’re right CC…

Assuming I DID garner many more clients as a result, what in world would I do with them, truly?! I’m not giving up my day job in exchange for photography and because I’ve cut back so many clinical hours to spend quality time with the family, the only thing I’d be telling these new folks is “I’ll get back to you.”

This is a case of entrepreneurs always wanting more. I am thankful for what I have and the people I’m able to help. Let that be enough.

The most popular activity HERE involves helping others with photography who truly desire it. What’s yours, other than spamming sites like this one?
