Mikey, I just checked out Trent Parke’s work, and oh my goodness, it’s excellent.  His tonality is super rich but it works incredibly well in giving the illusion of an uneasiness or an alternative world of sorts if that makes sense. Like some sort of post-apocalyptic reality.  Some of his stuff resembles DiCorcia’s Heads series which I enjoy greatly. You got to love great street photography.

    Thank you for sharing!

Props for dropping Sally Mann’s name. She’s a brilliant large format photographer who did photographs with kids interestingly

Good call, Lolz. I agree with making your pictures more powerful to more than just the client, more than just pictures of people with pretty lighting.

And your newer work looks really nice tonally. you use the color palette pretty well. I love the fact that you started in the darkroom and worked your way to digital. I wish I would’ve done that, It would have given me a better understanding of composition, tones as well as a grasp of technical prowess. Honestly, my Rebel has lasted four years and I’ve grown accustomed to it, you can become a talented photographer using any kind of camera, and I think you’re well on your way.

Might have to work on some things technically but from what I can see, you’re well on your way!! Good Luck!

Find a few you feel strongly about and link them, then tell us what these pictures mean to you (or could mean to someone) and technically how did you achieve that result, then we’ll talk about constructive criticism. Coo? 😀

I wouldn’t put you into that category, I will say that some of the images look kind of flat (lacking contrast) and some look like they have pretty intense blown out highlights. It also looks like you’ve done some photoshopping of skies in there, which look obviously added in.

The actual content seems boring, seems like things I’ve seen a thousand times. Which in commercial photography, people enjoy and they like the poses but for me, not knowing these people, it doesn’t ring for me. The composition isn’t strong enough for someone who doesn’t know them, to be drawn in…if that makes sense.

Technically, that is a better photograph. The whites aren’t so blown out. My professor always wants us to check the edges profusely to make sure we use the frame successfully.  There’s a lot of empty space at the top for my taste, I would have been tempted to tilt the camera down more to see what’s going on the the foreground a bit better. And the branding kind of ruins a little bit of it for me.

I’d agree with Jet, the highlights are blown out, the yellow cast is a bit too extreme, and maybe the subject matter gives me a personal sense of fauxtog, I’m just not feeling it personally. It’s not my muse.

I didn’t really want to make a topic, but I’ll gladly reply!

I’m studying photography at East Tennessee State and have been pursing photography for about 5 years now. I shot digital for four years and picked up film when I started taking classes at State.

Happy to help with any concerns or questions
