Wow! I think I would be so scared of breaking something that expensive haha
mynameisRachelParticipantI don’t want to sound like a huge ass but I can honestly say I don’t know how you can make people pay for your “work”. I feel guilty when the pictures I take of other people aren’t up to my standards and I’m not even making them pay or pretending I’m a business!
What you’re offering people is snapshots (pictures that could have been taken with a cell phone or any old compact digital camera). Even if you do have a DSLR, they’re still snapshots and your over-done edits are ruining whatever your pictures could have been.
This picture lacks composition and I feel like it could have been taken with a phone because there is no sign of a shallow DOF, which is a phone thing to do. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=494223293933388&set=pb.471369699552081.-2207520000.1366771335.&type=3&theater
Half of this child’s face isn’t even in focus. How is that possible?

Actually, you should know a bit of everything if you’re going to make people pay for your services.
I mean, I certainly wouldn’t go around making people pay for my plumbing services when I only know how to unplug a toilet with a plunger. . .

At least both of my parents have pretty nice SLR film cameras, my dad even has a couple of different lenses. It’s super heavy! Whenever I hold the film camera and then the digital one it always feels so light and cheap…

mynameisRachelParticipantWell, you aren’t a fauxtographer since you aren’t making people pay! Now, I’m not the most qualified person to be offering criticism, but I still have eyes, y’know?
I like your use of the shallow depth of field, but sometimes the lighting is a bit off (which I can totally understand! You don’t want to order people around and then the lighting changes, etc). And I have no idea whether or not some of your landscapes/animal pics are good because the watermark is so distracting that it’s all I could see!
There are also some issues with overexposure/lack of focus, but I can sympathize because sometimes it looks good in-camera or you don’t have enough time to double check to see if everything’s going OK. I assume that that will improve over time (I’m still waiting to improve in those fields 😛 ), so keep shooting! And keep using friends/animal as subjects, they’re fun to work with 🙂
Don’t worry about not being “good enough”, I think you’re only as good as you let yourself be and if you stop shooting you’ll forever stay at the same level!
Also I thought the pictures of the jumping dogs were really cute 🙂April 11, 2013 at 10:41 pm in reply to: I think I'm ready to ask for criticism, but I'm terrified of being inadequate. #8847mynameisRachelParticipantHaha I see nothing wrong with lots of pet pictures! I have so many cat and chicken pictures…But they’re always there and willing to be photographed!

And yes, I’m still working on “seeing” everyday objects as much more. I still feel like a beginner, which is probably a good thing because at least I know I’m not fooling myself into thinking I’m the best thing ever. I don’t think I want to sell any prints yet, but maybe I will in a few years!

You’re right about them lacking something… It’s probably why I like the one of the blue door so much, because it’s different (I don’t know if you feel the same way, though) even though it’s just a door. Would ya’ll just suggest changing perspective? Or is it beyond that? I’m not used to criticism because of course my family/friends only have good things to say, even my photography teacher only had nice things to say.
I’m just working with what I have (I can’t drive, so I’m stuck at either home or school) which is why there are a lot of cat pictures (the dog’s not mine). I guess I’ll have to work at making them exceptional pictures instead of average 🙂
Thank you for the feedback!
mynameisRachelParticipantHaha I’m glad! It’s one of my favorite pictures, especially considering it really was just a lucky shot 🙂
mynameisRachelParticipantThis is probably the cutest picture I’ve taken (and hopefully it shows up, otherwise I’ll be very sad haha)
mynameisRachelParticipantI didn’t think I would ever find anyone of fauxtog quality, but alas I have stuck upon gold! … Or something. I’ll link to the ones that are worse than the others, but there’s plenty to choose from.
Nothing says “Wedding” like a yellow face…

Did he say how old those pictures are? Because the style of their hair/makeup and clothes seems pretty 90s to me (maybe earlier?). And then you go from those pictures to the more recent ones and it looks like he forgot how to do photography… I don’t know if the older pictures are legitimately his.
