EyeDocPhotogParticipant
People
#16 (the little girl) would be a winner had you focused on her EYE instead of her hair.
What’s with the on camera (or worse yet popup) flash?! You’re kidding, right? Harsh shadows are just that… harsh. Get the flash OFF CAMERA … create some drama.
Places
Ummm, a bridge, couple buildings, view from the hotel room… not feeling it.
Things
Nothing to say.
To me, these look like your practice shots. Let’s check out the lighting here, focus there, and aperture the other. Nothing screams of “Man, that’s a good shot, let me capture it before it gets away.”
EyeDocPhotogParticipantyou need a tripod if you’re planning on getting tack sharp images.
Use the aperture to pull your subject away from the background.
You say that you don’t have the best lens – the “thrifty-fifty” can aid you in producing magnificent shots. If you know how to use it.
The 7D has the ability to make and store micro-adjustments to the AF system for each lens you have. This video will get you started:
EyeDocPhotogParticipantI spent some time looking through the portraits.
Every shot has some kind of hazy, muted, desaturated cast (perhaps some filter with a blend mode?). It’s very distracting.
Also, not one portrait is filling the frame and tack sharp – some are even downright blurry around the eyes. Are you using quality glass, or shooting raw?
If I was a potential client, I’d say you didn’t capture the beauty of these women at all – and this is presumably your BEST work (portfolio should be)? I wouldn’t hire you…
EyeDocPhotogParticipant*** This postΒ is a “ribbing.” Don’t flood me with hate posts.***
That person needs to have knowledge about composition, light patterns, exposure, color reaction to light, posing, use of camera equipment, use of camera settings, post processing etc.
Umm, the pattern of light is a constant. It is made up of both waves and particles which do not vary. In addition, color does not react to light – color is merely a perceptual concept used to describe in uniform, standard nomenclature which wavelengths of light are reflected off an object.
π
EyeDocPhotogParticipantthe L-358 was indeed discontinued, but you can pick up other meters on the cheap.
If you’re going to use manual, Aperture or Shutter priority modes with flashes, a light meter is tantamount to getting properly exposed shots without a plenitude of trial n error shots (which, IMHO, looks unprofessional).
EyeDocPhotogParticipantThe light meter I have is the Sekonic 358 (a bit pricey), but I recently read you can have “starter” lightmeter for $30 attachment to your iphone:
http://photojojo.com/store/awesomeness/luxi-iphone-light-meter/
EyeDocPhotogParticipantdon’t know your whole setup but I can offer this:
use a light meter – takes the guess work out of camera settings for correct exposure at any shutter, ISO and aperture. Even more handy with a flash;
get the flash off camera – I use YoungNuo YN622C ETTL flash triggers. They’re brilliantly simple to use.
don’t use <P> – use manual mode with given aperture that you’ve pre-configured for your DOF, then use the light meter with a test flash to set Av and ISO and bam! You’ve nailed it. π
EyeDocPhotogParticipantwell, I guess we’ve discovered why I’m not a photographer for hire.
I should stick to my day job. π
Not really sour grapes, more like envy I guess now that I think about it. I’ve got probably $20,000 worth of camera gear and this gal is using the equivalent of a Kidizoom and making images as good as, or better, than my own.
My sister in law is in the same category. A graduate of FIT, she’s the creative director of a major NYC corporate identity firm. With one snap of her iPhone, her “eye” catches scenes that blow me away. I wish I had that talent.
But my sis-in-law has reminded me time and again that she can’t successfully treat a potentially blinding eye infection, I guess we’re even.
EyeDocPhotogParticipantthat was correct link… I guess it’s just a matter of taste… the over-exposures, nothing tack-sharp, the tilt/slant “thing”…
I suppose it’s also the FB convo with her some months back where she was asking ME about why I don’t try to branch out into a second career etc. based on my daughters’ shots, and I had said I don’t have the time or desire to launch a 2nd career – at which point her comment was something to the effect of “it doesn’t take time! Just shoot and give the people the shots on USB and you’re done.” That turned me off….
EyeDocPhotogParticipantI feel just a little guilty posting this FB site because she is the daughter of my wife’s good friend:
https://www.facebook.com/AllisonPensePhotography
On FB, we’re acquaintances from my wife>her mom>her. And I’m bombarded with her faux-tography each and every week.
It’s getting to me. She definitely deserves a place on this site because of in-attention to detail. And no raw images. And no use of lightroom / CS6 / Elements. And no use of L glass. Or a full-frame sensor body. Or tack-sharp images…
EyeDocPhotogParticipantit is only variable NDs that suffers with angles as they are essentially two circular polarisers stacked on top of each other
Yup, kinda figured that was the case. The only way to produce variable degrees of light transmittance diffusely through the entire lens is with 2 opposing polarizing filters.
EyeDocPhotogParticipantBill, thanks for the not-so-obvious tip! I learned about sensor cleaning after shooting the moon at midday, only to see the dust spots from my sensor at f32 which, of course, were not present below ~f16 due to diffraction limits. I will remember to clean the filter with my lens pen before hand.
I will also play with the angles too for your reasons stated. I’m sure this 15″ shot is going to take all afternoon for the setup. But I am looking forward to it. π
EyeDocPhotogParticipantActually, can only change the text color during edit mode, after posting it shows up black…. oh, well, I’m happy with the indentation.
EyeDocPhotogParticipantUsually I copy what I want to quote and paste it into the reply window.Β Then I add my own text on the next line.Β And, finally I go back and highlight what I pasted, then click the toolbar quotation marks icon (or b-quote if in text mode)
Is that it?! See, I haven’t been missing as much as I thought. I can even change the text color! Man, I’m starting to feel like my parents when I showed them the internet for the first time…. π
EyeDocPhotogParticipantThanks, nesgran, I did purchase a 10 stop ND. Between your and CC’s , I’ve received quite the education on ND filters.
You know, again, it’s all about the basics.
*** BTW: How do you reference a quote from someone’s post and have it highlighted in YOUR own post? I see many of you do this, and I haven’t yet caught on the technique.***
