here’s another, which is unedited and shows what I mean http://www.davidvrj.com/Category/Headshots/i-wQxFrKb/0/L/wow-again-L.jpg

btw, anyone know how the hell to make it so that the photos retain the same colors as they do in the image editing software? I’ve had to use print screen then paste and save on infranview to get the right colors, as I’ve tried a million methods other I’ve seen online for saving straight from capture one, or lightroom, or photoshop, to no avail. It’s killing my workflow. any suggestions?

Hey, Jetpix made some good points. In the second shot, I forgot to switch the back light from the left to the right side of the frame, leaving it a little flatter that it could have been otherwise. And after a good look I did notice that the front lights in the first shot should be moved further away from the face and then I could bring down the shutter speed until the lighting looks the same, to lessen the glow on her face, and I should have brought the back lights closer to her body and more to the side of her than behind since the hair is blocking what could have been a more defined jawline. I’ll keep this in mind for the next shoot, thanks! As for “flatness”, I was going for the all-around even lighting for women. It looks more flattering than a different key and fill light, I think. But, I did use a fill light that’s half the exposure of the key in the “bad girl” photos (the one on the right), which is more noticeable in my other photos, which I’ll post later.

Okay, so I borrowed my friends backdrop and the chick I shot a few minutes ago was phenomenal. I think I’m getting close to perfect shots now, straight out of the camera, and it hasn’t even been a week since I started doing headshots. Check it out https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/209479_217957591663421_1922995341_o.jpg

For comparison, here are her past three facebook profile pics https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/309347_10150881840266036_14805912_n.jpg

I’m so glad I gave her a shot, considering I had never met her in person before and had her fb pics to go by. lol. Every harsh critique is welcome!

He’s the guy who influenced me to take headshots. I watched his B&H workshop and got inspired. Considering it hasn’t been a week since I started taking them, I’m happy, but every little nitpick is appreciated so I can improve and take some shots worth paying at least $500 for

ohhh right, I see what you mean. Most of my pics include the hairline; I just had the camera tilted up a little more. The third pic is more of what I go for

Thanks for the feedback Jason! I feel the same way, and since I’m so fresh at this, I’m going to delete all those photos and make way for new ones that I love. For example, these are the ones I took today, straight from the camera. Also, I crop out some of the hairline so that I can include the shoulders more, which I feel are more important, while still keeping the head at a nice size with the eyes on the rule of thirds line

I understand that the photo in the first link is not following the rule of thirds, but I still like the crop lol. Here’s a better example (still unedited) http://www.davidvrj.com/Category/Headshots/i-rMBw66s/0/L/Chantelle-100331-1-L.jpg

Okay cool, I’ll keep that in mind, since I didn’t retouch her at all lol. I guess I’ll have to unwhiten them

I love your photos man. I found myself pausing and taking a deep look at many of your photos. Keep it up, and with some good marketing you could  go far. Your photos have a unique look to them, in which the imperfections make them unusually captivating and thought provoking.

That being said, weddings are not your forte, at all. I think you do best when you have more control over the photo, and are not good at capturing the unexpected, candid moments. Your lighting and composition were a bit basic in those shots, especially compared to all your other shots. You’re still great though

Thanks! I get it now, I found some info on it too; it’ll definitely help a lot.

Here’s a photo I took earlier today, first time taking shots like this; any pointers? http://www.davidvrj.com/photos/i-Rzr9P52/0/L/i-Rzr9P52-L.jpg

Thanks for the feedback!  I like to think I’m not, and I have this site to thank. I didn’t use any strobes, but I will next time to brighten up the background a bit. The two guys in the photos are good friends of mine who were around to help me set up the lights, which is why their clothing was so.. messy.

Can anyone explain to me the shoulder thing? Maybe an example of the heads tilted to the upper or lower shoulder? I’m getting a little confused trying to figure that out

Lastly, for fun, here are some old fauxtog headshots of mine that i liked http://www.davidvrj.com/photos/i-KwHNXt5/0/M/i-KwHNXt5-M.jpg http://www.davidvrj.com/photos/i-hrRm5kw/0/M/i-hrRm5kw-M.jpg http://www.davidvrj.com/photos/i-8kJhTDC/0/M/i-8kJhTDC-M.jpg http://www.davidvrj.com/photos/i-c7hbFzK/0/M/i-c7hbFzK-M.jpg

Maybe the first one is a little too yellow, but I like them. The one with the bubbles isn’t my favorite, but definitely not even close to a fauxtog photo. And the two things I could think of to make the second photo better are using reflectors and keeping more of the teddy bears in frame; it kind of sucks that you cropped them halfway out while still having some space on the top, but their expressions are nice, and im sure it was tough to frame and keep steady while being that low to the ground
