But since you asked, here are the free versions of sites I experimented with. I haven’t updated them in a long time, because except for WordPress mostly as a blog, I don’t see them as options for me at this point.

I definitely would create a website once I move (I’m going to graduate pretty soon, and until then, I need to focus on school and studies as well) …and I plan on moving and eventually doing portraits as a side business..maybe freelance? Editorial has always interested me.

But as of now, it doesn’t seem logical for me to pay $99 a year or whatever amount, when there are things like lenses and equipment I want to invest in. I don’t make enough to pay for those, but if I charged enough to, I wouldn’t get as much experience as I currently do. Also, winter where I am, is a season where almost no one wants to take outdoor pictures. Maybe I’ll get a job to pay for stuff in the meantime…but I’d like to be able to pay for college too. And until I set up a studio of sorts, I can’t take indoor shots, although I started a class today where I can learn more about off-camera and strobe lighting.

When I’m 18, I promise to file taxes and do business right with a website portfolio. Until then…people my age care more about the pictures, and I feel most couldn’t be bothered to go on a website, especially if it’s not compatible with their phones. Thanks for the input!

Chikimia, thank you as well. I don’t consider myself very confident, but I guess I am confident in myself in many ways and just need reassurance  now and then. I enjoyed looking at your images…

AI, I saw the “edit” part and wasn’t sure what to make of it. If you saw my images, do you think it’s worth investing in a website to start building my portfolio? Initially I worried that having a site other than Facebook would be me trying to seem more pro than I am, and that the people I take pictures of wouldn’t bother going to it unless I had their gallery up there. In my experience, most my age want me to post on Facebook so they can use them as profile pictures. Only some notice the quality/res difference between FB and other sites. Maybe if I can find an inexpensive site to host?

Thank you I Hate Fauxtography, haha. I take photography way too seriously (YANAP has a part in that) and tend to be hard on myself, but I manage to have a lot of fun shooting which keeps me going. The good: thanks to this site…on my own I stopped doing edits that made skin looked jaundiced, no matter how many friends said they love the “vintage” look. I’d hope I’m  not where I am now if I had been shooting for years and years though. I hate having my age be an excuse, but I hope I can wait on paying for a website/portfolio and certain necessities until I decide to branch out and can afford them on my own. After all, I’ve barely begun my photography adventure, and would like it to be my thing, not an expensive whim my parents pay for.

I looked at your page before, and love the colors in your images. The links were helpful. Even if I don’t pursue photography, I still plan to do something business related. Getting on the right track is the difficult part… I don’t have many photography peers who are as…obsessed (willing to wake up for sunrise pictures) with portrait photography as I am, so I look to those who are slightly older than me and pretty successful. Also, people on the internet of course, haha.

Thank you! I don’t plan to try to put myself out there, unless people (students) come to me for pictures. Besides seniors, I really only get people trying to put together a modeling/acting portfolio who tell me I should increase my prices but I want to make sure I can give them consistent work so I do a lot without charging which will be harder to do with school starting. Guess I’ll have to limit what I take. Don’t worry, I won’t steal babies and weddings from those who specialize in that work.

And I do want to upgrade and get more equipment (lenses, batteries) but I don’t want to go all out until I’ve mastered what I have and get a better camera body/laptop. But thank you again for taking the time to read and respond and the posing tips. I will do my best to have a “humble business” and not oversell myself. Artists tend to feel that they are better when photography for example, is an ever changing thing that you can learn so much from. Feedback from people other than friends and family helps. I guess there’s a balance between helpful encouragement and being honest and condescending that is difficult. I don’t want to become the kind of person that think I’m cool cause I have a camera, lol. And thanks to everyone else who answered this as well.

I have another site, but Facebook is what I update most. It’s a resource, I understand why some might be snobbish about it.

Oh man, I totally noticed that hand but I think I remember not knowing what to do with it. With my lens I was too close and had not room to back up and was more focused on her face :/

And some people really like having “instagram”/vintage pictures, but I try not to do that to all of them. I think I get what you mean about forced angles, and I’ll try to study more composition books. There aren’t really any photography classes at my highschool besides darkroom which I already took…I’ll look into it though.

There are always little things I want to change, but I think I’m getting better about achieving a little more in camera.

Like this one, I wish there was more light in her face

    This one being more balanced

    Idk…a sharper focus?

I don’t like the idea that my pictures lack the oomph that doesn’t make them any better than something the senior’s parents could take on a point and shoot. So I will definitely try to dispute that and get the other technical stuff down. I find that a lot of my pictures have the washed out sky/background at times like high noon…(I try to avoid that time)

Oh, and another thing. Majority of the time, I will shoot manual. But occasionally if there’s a certain look I want to achieve and I want to get it quickly, I will shoot in aperture priority. A photographer told me I was cheating, but I feel as if I’m using the tools available to me –like what would be the point if I never used my light meter or sensor? And because my kit lens is not good in low light situations, I’ve even tried creative auto with adjustments being in a laundromat. What are opinions on shooting in other modes? Do fauxtogs usually shoot in manual and just not get it right, or auto?

Thanks for all the advice! I was looking at the 50mm 1.4 as a lens, so when I can afford it, I will get it.

And I know what is meant by my pictures lacking inspiration. I think once I get the hang of things and learn better control and am able to also direct people more, I can have more creative control. I have a lot of ideas, but they need to be implemented.

I also have some information on how to run a “business” at 16. I don’t have to pay income tax until I am over 5K, so I think I am okay there for now. There’s been some criticism for not trying to build my portfolio more first, with my friends and family. Well I did that as often as I could juggling school and I like to think my current work is a work-in-progress and showing my improvements. I know I’ve only been really getting into this for a few months, but I’ve gotten to meet and work with so many people and it’s been so great for me. Who knows, I might not try to become a professional, but this has opened doors for me. Thanks for all the comments, I appreciate them.
