After much soul searching I purchased a 7D Mk II body today. It came with a camera bag, extra neck strap and battery! An extra break is it takes the same battery as my 5D Mk III, so I can charge two batteries at once now.
We attended a charity dinner tonight and I took the new camera along to see how much abuse it could stand. Turns out it can stand a lot. I took 450 photos and used half a battery, give or take. The photos aren’t trying to be great photography, just test shots to see what the camera can do with ambient light. Look at the photo quality, then look at the EXIF data.
I don’t have a raw converter on this computer and have to upgrade the OS before I can install Canon’s software, so these are JPEGs that have been straightened and cropped. I had it write raw files to a second card so later I will process some of them to see how they compare. It’s late so only 5 photos. They start here:

How can people shoot at this standard … and advertise themselves out as professional photographers at £70/$106 per hour, perhaps ignorance is bliss.

To my literal mind, that’s not the real question; it’s easy to shoot at that standard, put a flash in the hot shoe and rotate the camera. It’s easy to advertise. Perhaps less easy to think those photos are good enough to request money.
The question I have is, how do they find people willing to pay?

    That’s pretty good!

Looks like shows should be here:  http://www.nbc.com/classic-tv/the-a-team/video

All they play is “This content is unavailable”

So my question for all of you is have you ever had any “crazy” clients or gotten caught in a fight at an event?

    Not so far.

EXIF is a way to record the camera’s settings.

That’s true.  But, unless Facebook has changed their practice in the last month or two, they strip EXIF from photos.  I suppose you could type out the EXIF data, or even copy and past it, but that just seems like work when you can take a photo of the display screen.  Some of the general photos are labelled as “behind the scenes” or “shoot before the shoot”, so there is an obvious attempt to draw an audience into the whole process.  showing the camera back seems to follow the same line of thought.

I agree all the pages show a confused mess.  There does, however, seem to be an attempt to learn and progress, even if that learning process has taken nine years to get to this point.  I like many of the photos.

This video:  https://www.facebook.com/VisionOfMemoriesphotography/videos/vb.432923003412831/871772299527897/?type=2&theater , shows a black guy who says he is Jewel Bunch III.  Looking more closely at his “Bio” on Tumbler, the link that took me to Jewel Carlson on Model Mayhem may have been a bad link.  She may have nothing to do with Visions of Memories.    I couldn’t find a Jewel Bunch on Model Mayhem.

Not convinced.  The text makes me wince and some of the photos could be much better, but this one reads:

    http://visionofmemoriesphotography.tumblr.com/image/98455981246

Shooting the camera’s back is a way to record settings.  I think it’s interesting that a Nikon set to manual will still show Exposure Compensation.

The message is confused.  Jewel Bunch III has a black hand holding the book but at Model Mayhem is a Caucasian female model and photographer named Jewel Carlson.   I can’t tell if the web site (http://www.visionsofmemoriesphotography.com/) is coming, or was abandoned.

I think I see promise, yet she has been messing with this for 9 years and there are other photographer’s photos mixed in which adds to the confusion.

Vogue has a cover archive, and that cover is not in it!  Though, I only went back as far as 1942.  That would have to have been a cover from around Aug. 2012, or 2013 since it shows the US price as $4.50 and the price went from $3.99 to $4.99 pretty quickly.   It is amazing how their covers have changed with changes in technology and management.  Country to country the look is different, too.

Before looking at so many Vogue issues I was going to say his photography was fine, but he needs a new and better retoucher.  After looking at Vogue I think he would fit right in.  They have lots of plastic skin too!

Setting black and white points, and adjusting contrast will help eliminate the white haze.  You are shooting to raw files so as to have maximum data to work with during post?

    LOL!  No.

Facebook gets more photos each day than Flickr does in a month, it’s still a lousy platform for photography.   Joni’s Weebly page is sorted and the presentation is much better than on Facebook.  On that page it is clear they are not just family photos.  I think you still need WCS to explain “I soon realized they were an amazing set of images.”

She’s not promising 50 quality photos.  She is promising 50 edited photos.

What about, instead of talking to her, take her on photo walks and challenge each other to improve lighting, posing, focus, etc., etc.

It’s unfortunate she lost her guy and their son will never meet his father.

I don’t have a problem with the composite photo.   If it is what Sierra asked for and she is happy with the result, that’s awesome.  Having an image of Lane shopped into the photo with partial opacity makes a degree of sense.  In ten or fifteen years she is going to be asked about the photo by Taos.  It makes it more straight forward to explain how the photo came to be and it is clear Lane was not standing there when the photo was taken.  It is making news but it’s not a news photo so there is no reason to hold it to news photo standards.

I’m not sure what message might be sent to others.  One message being sent is that there are photographers that can manipulate a photo to include what you (or they) want.  A similar message is that just because you see it in a photo there is no guarantee that it reflects reality.  Both of these are pretty good messages.  Other messages might be a bit creepy.  The notion that our deceased relatives are somehow transported to heaven where they can look down on us has been around a long time.  That’s a bit creepy!  Who wants their deceased parents looking in on them while engaged in sex?  That whole bit about martyrs getting 72 virgins in the next life is just as creepy!  Sometimes it’s important to remember God did not create man; man created God.

Beyond all the religious nonsense, there have been ghost stories for centuries.  Many of us grew up watching cartoons of Casper the Friendly Ghost.  “Ghost” was one of Patrick Swayze’s movies, and unfortunately, now, he is a ghost, you can see him in all his old movies.  Have you seen the videos of Elvis singing with someone who is still living?  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7OFl3TJSUk

I think it’s fair to say most people will bring their personal baggage to a viewing of any photo.

I think they look pretty good, too.

One tip. When I look at this one,

    portrait.

I see she has a thin white line around her shoulders, between her and the wall.  That line is caused by too much sharpening.  The whole image looks like a lot of sharpening was applied and I would be inclined to sharpen it less if it were mine, but, if you like the general sharpness I would still run a small blur tool across the shoulders to remove the white line.

And, a couple of observations about the same photo:  If she was moved a few feet from the wall, the wall could be unfocused which would give it a softer look.  Also, the wall seems to be light on the top part with a very sharp transition to a dark lower part.  The transition seems to be diagonals from higher to lower on both sides of her.

Hayley, perhaps you could direct us to your work on Flickr, since you apparently already have an account there and this page seems to have been set up to work well with Flickr?

The link you provided to Tumblr takes me to a log in screen and I don’t want to create an account.
