SilverParticipant
Can I message you Worst Case if I have any questions? I’m trying to find a mentor in my area, but they are charging a lot of money to even give a portfolio review. I understand they are busy, and I dont blame them. I’ve been learning on my own picking up tips and tricks here and there. I will not spam you LOL I just have a question once in a while.
SilverParticipantAlso should I watermark my images on the web? I try not to do it, I feel its a distraction from the image?
SilverParticipantThank you for the tips! What is the best size for pictures to be shown on web?
I will work on my website. Its been a headache for me for a while. I’ll work on the contrast on my photos. I’ll get rid of my animal pics LOL ( I laughed out loud about the kitty cat remark) I actually forgot they were there. Yeah tigers, lemurs and kitty cats (oh my) dont say “portrait photographer”.
Is resizing and compressing the same thing? If they are not, which is better to showcase my pics?
I have tried to read up about it, but alas. . . . its a lot of info. I’ll get rid of the scroll bar and I’ll try to resize the whole website. I was gonna wait, but maybe it would be better for me to invest in a custom design right now. I had a vista print site before, and it was the worst and it would make my pics look cloudy (maybe I tried to compensate by making my photos overly contrasty?)
Another question for you guys. I am writing up a business plan and doing some local market research. I want to be able to offer my clients professional prints if they so choose and/or a digital disk/usb for a fee. How would you price out the prints? Of course I would like to make a profit on the prints, but I don’t want to scare them away by the prices? Is there a rule of thumb?
SilverParticipantSilverParticipantyeah i just noticed they haven’t undated thier blog since nov 2012 lol . . . maybe they are too busy?
SilverParticipantI mean they have some great photos. very marketable. I’m not bashing them, I just think its risky?
SilverParticipantNo one is saying you should be ashamed. No one is saying you shouldn’t have saved them. I can appreciate the tradgey you’ve gone through and I am really sorry it had to happen to you. Good luck on your journey in life.
SilverParticipantI am sorry if I came off as rude, i didn’t mean to. I do not think these photos are technically sound. As for artwork, I would have to say they effected me in a really horriric, unsettling way. If you were meaning to invoke sorrow, compassion, emptiness and emotions of that nature you have missed your mark. If you were wanting a provoking horror, you have suceeded. If that is the case, it is not thereputic anymore, but more of a morbid scare tactic. AND to be honest, these should not be up on your business page at all. Image a pregnant woman looking for mat pictures? I’m sorry, I wouldn’t hire you. Thats why I suggested a private portfolio for reflection purposes. All the power to you for self expression, but I have to agree that a facebook business page is not the appropriate place for those kinds of pics. Not only that, but you are putting forth a really unprofessional online persona at first glance at these pics. Not trying to bash you, but trying to help you see what potential customers see.
SilverParticipanti just feel like they are deeply personal, are you sure you want critiques on them? i think they should be printed and kept in a portfolio for you to reflect and to talk about with your therapist.
SilverParticipantSEC – no i did not plan for the outlet to be such a big distraction. I noticed it afterward while in post processing and try to remove it, but I have very basic knowledge and everything I did made it seem worse. But i think I have to train myself to check the negitive space around the subject, so i won’t have to fight with it in post. my lovely model in the corner was intentional. I thought the base boards and wall corner would help lead the eye to her. The grain/noise of the photo was intentional and done in camera. I loved the dramatic lighting on her face. But next time I will take my time and look for distractions, I will pull her forward. But I am having trouble with posing. My model is not a professional, she is just one of my great friends. Now the window was not intentional, maybe if I pulled back and showed more window, and positioned her closer to the window, got down on her level and filled the photo with her and the window it would be a better shot? Although I did show more of the room to make it feel empty and to make her look small. These were my thoughts. this is why I need some advice, I am really unsure of myself.
MBC – Thank you. One of the reasons I posted on here was because for the past 3 months I have been trying to read everything on photography I could find. Last week I felt really overwhelmed, this photo was only my 5th for fun photo shoot and I don’t feel as if I have grown at all. I was sure all of my photos sucked and I felt really horrible that I made my friends sit through them. So I thought I could use a critique. Thank you for your advice.
SilverParticipantI will be definately be shooting there again, its in my apartment. 🙂 I have this huge window . I’ll definately be watching for distractions in my next shoot. Thanks guys.
SilverParticipantI didn’t see my last post so: Thank you for your help!!! This is the advice I truly need.
