ParticipantI’ve loved photography for a long time. When I first started out, not too many people wanted to jump into a photoshoot with a newbie (free shoot!), so I began my work in self portraits. I’ve been slacking lately and feel like I do the same thing over and over again. Here are some photo from a recent self-portrait shoot I did. I would love your feed back!
Thank You!

Participant… I’m not sure if that’s a compliment or an insult….
I went through a miscarriage a few months ago and my therapist thought it would be a good idea if I used photography to illistrate how I was feeling.
I apoligize if they offended anyone.

ParticipantJust taking another look. They are different when you know the back story.

ParticipantWell I can’t say I like many of them and when I read the text that goes with them I like them less. Sorry not trying to be cruel just honest. Not sure if there is meant to be some sort of arty meaning to them ? I’ll gladly help you with the photography aspect, but I’m not a therapist.

Participanti just feel like they are deeply personal, are you sure you want critiques on them? i think they should be printed and kept in a portfolio for you to reflect and to talk about with your therapist.

ParticipantYes, I do. They’re also my artwork. I’m proud of them. Why hide something you love? Not every photograph is about that.

ParticipantI like a lot of your stuff but wasn’t too keen on these as photographs. I’m not sure it was a great idea to share them, sure you can do as you please and express yourself how you like but there’s a lot of people, including myself, who didn’t quite want to be reminded of something deeply painful and personal to them when they logged on to engage in discussions about photography.
Not trying to be mean or spiteful, just my opinion.

I figured that one out before you posted it, so in that case, I believe your shots conveyed your anguish well. That’s good. They were emotionally involving and only bordering on over the top. Glad you didn’t do something obnoxious like selective color.
As far as the shots themselves, this section (am I a fauxtog?) isn’t really appropriate. I can’t judge your technique or skill from self-portraits, because that style shoots so differently from most other photography. I chuckled at the remote in your hand, though.
Some of the shots are good, some are meh. I like the first two a lot where the desolation and anguish come through; not so much the last few which looks like a high-schooler taking pics of a friend.

ParticipantIn my very humble opinion 75% of the pictures are extremely awful. I understand you went through a trauma and this is your way to exorcise fears and pain, however I wouldn’t call it artistic and I wouldn’t post them on Facebook. Again it’s my opinion and I’m just being honest.

ParticipantFrom a photography standpoint, they are interesting and have high emotional impact. They certainly grab the attention. The outdoor series could benefit from better lighting. You put yourself in a patch of shadow surrounded by lighted areas. That tends to distract from the main subject. The indoor series is quite interesting, but a bit busy and it is sometimes hard for the eye to find the subject. I hope this helps.
