Hello, I’m in high school and have an intrest in photography. I recently got a medium grade DSLR camera. I have been researching the art, practicing on my friends and family, and apprenticing under a REAL photographer. Unfortunately I live in a small area and we dont have any photography classes nearby. I was hoping you could give me some resources to help me better understand my camera and it’s setting etc.. I know that I am not very good, but I am looking to improve in anyway I can. We are going on a family trip to CA so the more improvements I can get the better! Also some critiquing would be great. Thank you for everything (and for producing quality work)!https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-NE6YbfI9vI0/UBHXhVT1z6I/AAAAAAAABvQ/D41Q7o6AWUA/w262-h429/1234+040.JPGhttps://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-kJyOaIgf5CE/UBIJ-Q3jrqI/AAAAAAAABvo/REpnh89ds_4/w287-h429/photo.jpghttps://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-6uVyB_Go08A/UWy54HwEteI/AAAAAAAACkw/xGaHfBcfOLU/w287-h429/030.JPGhttps://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-5vGFxI_N-hs/UWtuYlP7b_I/AAAAAAAACcY/4y5xQJCO42w/w641-h429/223.JPG

The shots are mostly technically sound (lighting, sharpness, etc.) but the compositions need some work – especially the one of the girl in the alley. Too much of the distracting background is in focus, taking away from the subject of the shot. Also, be careful of cropping out body parts – you should never crop out directly at any joints or leave out parts of the hands/feet.
I’m sure others will chime in with a more discerning eye.

The second one was interesting with the lines and shapes. Maybe crop a little off the left side, that spot is distracting.
The girl in the alley has potential, but shooting down at her level more would have improved it. I agree too that you should have a much shallower depth of field to bring attention to the subject.
The third looked a little out of focus, but I like the composition.
