I know of a few older photographers who have been in business for years and dont produce anything worthy of saying wow about.

Ya learning disability’s suck. I do use spell check but I get worried about possibly using the wrong word and things like that occasionally.

“I whole-heartily agree that someone who claims to be a professional should act as a professional, which means proper spelling/grammar.”

Even if you put a lot of time into typing something you still may have misspellings if you are just bad at spelling and grammar. I do have people proof read my contracts but I don’t always have someone go over every single blog post or email I send out.

I get it if there are several mistakes that is annoying but hopefully I seem like I try my best =)

“All these fauxtographers, at least the really bad ones, also seem to have horrible grammar/spellings skills and terrible abilities at graphic design. It’s like there’s an “anti-artistic” gene they all share.”

I have always been really bad at spelling =(

I really hate that most people think bad spelling / grammar = unprofessional.

I go to bridal shows as a printer because my family is in the printing business so I go to help my dad out. Anyway this photographer said at a show that this image was made orange by the printer and she had to fire her printer (haha). My dad knew better.

I don’t think its right to reveal who this person is because they are regulars at a bridal show that is held at a venue right across the street from our print shop / photography studio who is very good about sending brides to us for both services.

I have seen a lot of boudoir ads pop up and a lot of the images seem to not have been taken well. I got suspicious about one ad in particular that featured some completely nude photos (not taken very well) which I would never show in a ad. I do boudoir and those shoots are usually around christmas – valentines day so wives can send something nice to their husbands (especially with this being a military town).

The best response I received was:

“licensing is local but as far as the IRS is concerned, if you have income you must report it!”

There are different rules for licensing for different city’s / states. You might want to double check with your department of revenue

I meant charging tax on products and paying tax as a business ( the government would notice if you were). Ever hear the term small business? My licenses is a sole proprietorship meaning I am the only one that is a part of my business and I do not have employees. I also know that part time photographers also have business licenses. Anyway I am curious about this so I asked at another forum under the business section.

“One way or another, I will have a few bucks in my pocket resulting from doing something I really enjoy. That, to me, will be success.”

If you are charging you are a business and could get in trouble for not having a license or paying taxes. Don’t accept money at all if you do not want to turn it into a business. Just a heads up.

Yellow skys are not a good fix for a blown out sky. I know that type of coloring is trendy but you seem to be using it to just try and fix your blown out skys. You are simply shooting at the wrong time of the day. If you shoot RAW it may be possible to get that detail back. Place you subject in the shade and use your flash (off camera) on the subject so you can keep the detail in the backgrounds.

^ I forgot you cant edit posts. I was using my phone and this website is not a great mobile site. You can probably tell how bad of a speller I am. Oh well.

Anyway to continue: a good computer monitor and desktop computer to edit on, Photoshop and/or lightroom (though there is also Gimp which is free and is a ok program). External hard drives to back up your work. Umm have I missed anything? Probably but you get the idea.

stef is right. Going into business costs a lot. There are expences other than equipment. If it is your goal to be in business you will also have to worry about the cost of: a business license, insurance,  a website, a domain name, & if you dont want to learn then paying someone to get the seo on your website correct as well. advertizing : print & web. A studio or office : optional but helpful. &

Its been a while since I have been here… Sorry about that.

Soaringturkeys: I am a girl btw. The bride is a childhood friend of mine so I simply offered my services at a discount. I offered a engagement shoot as a wedding gift (free so of coarse they took it). I market myself as a package since I have a studio in my familys printing company they print my work and they print save the dates, invitations, and we even carry personalized wedding items. We are a one stop shop pretty much. I was just a little annoyed that they choose someone that could not produce quality work. No big deal anymore though. I suppose it was just the initial shock.

Today I saw “Im trying out a new action today”

& The detail in the girls arm was really blown out. It could have been in the original but this is why I don’t like actions. People just apply them to anything without tweaking them.
