ParticipantWhoa there buddy, I’m not saying I’m great. Never did, and I won’t. I’m just surrounded by this type of attitude. I work with a number of Suicide Girls (not really my favorite subject, but I get along with them and they trust that I won’t take advantage of them) and this came from guys who really just want to get them over to their homes and get creepy. I don’t really care if somebody is a solid shooter, if they have fun and enjoy what they’re doing I can respect that; what I don’t appreciate is the arrogance I’ve encountered as of late. I am doofus; not going to lie, I’m also socially awkward and I don’t really enjoy shooting people… I also don’t really feel that motivated to prove myself on this site. If you’ve seen my responses to critiques I think (hope) you’ll find I’ve been respectful of others work. I’ll do my best to help people as long as they show an interest and/or appreciation for their craft and subjects. All in all enjoy coming on here and seeing what people have going on, sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s frustrating, but I really don’t put too much stock into this site rather than being an amusing distraction. All I really hope for is that we, as photographers, can become a little more cognizant of our behavior and attitudes towards our subjects, each other and the general public. Bad grammar has been noted as well, this may not have been my proudest moment… and yes, feel free to tell me this is a cop-out; probably is… I do wish you all best of luck in your endeavors. Sometimes a guy just needs to scream out his frustrations, I did, and that is all.

ParticipantYeah, it was a rant spurned by frustration. Language may not have been the necessary, then again speaking with people as of late in a civil tone seems to be infective as well. Just my observations on a lot of my younger counterparts in the field who don’t seem to be particularly interested in learning photography, merely using it as a vehicle to take advantage of others or fulfill their ego. I have posted images in the past as well. Feel free to delete this post if you desire, it’s really not that big of a deal.

ParticipantOh yeah, a color calibrated monitor is nice, but not necessary. I’m color blind (severely color deficient), but once you understand how to color correct by using either RGB numbers or CMYK percentages you can essentially bypass the limitations of an un-caliberated monitor. For example I have taken a monitor, turned it to grey scale and done color corrections for my students; it’s not optimal to do this, but it is possible. =)

ParticipantIn regards to canvas; I didn’t mean to say not to do it, I meant if you want to get a decent print without frustration bypass it. It is prone to printer head strikes that will destroy your investment and force you to print again (yes, I know the correct way to load heavy media). Actually, all heavy media (310gsm+) requires you to finesse the print, this doesn’t take away from it, but is merely a consideration. My go to paper for Epson or Canon printers is Illford’s Gold Fibre Silk 310gsm, it works very well on black and whites/monotones – it does not do well with color. For color I generally go with Epson’s Galeie premium luster paper; it’s not the best as far as it’s color profile, but it provides good returns on quality for the economy. Also note Canon users, if you desire to use Epson papers with your printers you will have to create custom profiles, epson does not provide .icc profiles for them. Further, be aware when printing B&W acquiring a good RIP will enhance the ink output on the final print.
Ok, printing is a pain, but not horrible. It’s like a long math equation; break it down into smaller problems, expect to spend time and realize that if you keep plugging away you’ll get what you’re looking for.
Best of luck in your prints!

ParticipantMaybe it should be, what gear do you really rely on?
24-70 & 70-200. Neither are my favorites, but they are bread and butter lenses. Not listing brands; doesn’t matter (nikon vs canon)
…actually I shoot more tintypes on 4×5 these days, so, yeah… I hate hauling that bastard around.

ParticipantLets narrow this down a bit. I print a great deal, it’s my job. If you have specific questions I will do my best to assist you. Printing is not simple, but at the same time it’s not as difficult as people make it.
1- Turn your monitor down. Don’t expect to replicate what it can do. You can’t.
2- Icc profiles are a great place to start if you don’t have the ability to create custom profiles.
3- Breathe. It takes time. Learn it right. Learn it now, and save time and money later.
* Canvas is pure concentrated evil.

ParticipantI have a tendency to agree with the previous posts. Alien Bee’s are pretty ok little units. The B1600 are decent, maybe not for product work, but for the price point they represent a pretty good value. They are by no means the best, but lets keep the money considerations in the forefront. They are lightweight, reliable, and pretty consistent as far as the temp, especially for the price. Some people don’t like the way they look – which to some is a little cheap, but they get the job done. No they aren’t Profotos, but then again you aren’t paying the same price. You can always get a little vagabond mini powerpack so you can use them in the field; also another advantage the can be plugged into a standard outlet without tripping the breakers.

ParticipantI don’t know why this thread annoys me; the guy is a douche, but he has never claimed to be anything but. There are no illusions as to how he behaves. He acts like a low-life dick, and his photos cater to the image he has created. His look will be gone shortly and he’ll either have to come up with something else or will fall to the wayside. These young girls (women, actually) are being fucked. They are being fucked by their agents. They are being fucked by their parents. They are being fucked by the industry. It’s not just the photographer. It’s the whole damned institution.
Yes, I’ve worked in this world. I hate it. Porn to me is more sincere and honest.

Participant“You’re not suppose to get naked with your models and preform sexual acts with them. A lot of those girls look so young too. It disturbs me that people idolize him so much. I could never respect someone like him as a photographer.”
Well, ok, I don’t disagree with your assertion; but please note your problem is more with him than whether or not he is a “Fauxtog”. Just know the difference between your assertion of his work vs opinion of the man… Not trying to be a dick, just pointing out how one doesn’t particularly have anything to do with the other….

ParticipantI don’t know… I’m on the fence about this. I can see your point, but I also am familiar and acknowledge the similar sentiments issued forth against artists like Lee Friedlander, William Eggleston, Edwynn Houk or even the likes of Picasso or Pollock… If you want to use his personal failings (true or false) against him that is fine, but I don’t really know how that should influence your opinion of his work – it hasn’t kept people away from Roman Polanski’s movies. Regardless he is able to pull something from his subjects that I can’t…
JustAndy
ParticipantThank you. I think it’s important that we all remember to have fun. Once we accept the responsibility and ensuing frustrations that come with making photography our career we can lose that initial enjoyment that drove us. One thing I tell stressed out photographers fairly often is that we take pictures… If we screw up NO ONE DIES. Be serious when it comes to your work, but remember that in the grand scheme of things… we just take pictures…
