    David –

The head shot of Sandy is good, but not perfect.  There is too much light glare that needs to be knocked down (cheeks, nose, forehead) – contrast seems a little high, and – it looks like you were using two fill  lights without a main – resulting in, for my tastes, a shot that is a little flat – almost as though you had a main light without a fill – kind of the same result.  In looking at the shot, were your lights both placed at about a 30-45 degree angle with equal intensity (or distance)?  If so, one should be moved closer to the lens, the other should have intensity dropped off a little – it will give you a little more shadowing and contouring of that lovely face.

Again, I have to say it – make sure you computer monitor is correctly calibrated.  It seems to be a recurring theme around here – monitors not calibrated correctly, final results come out way off the mark.  Recalibrate and see if you see what we are seeing . . . . . .

    You didn’t explain anything.

You’re getting quite popular on the back-channel chatter – you’re reputation as a boorish dilettante grows daily.  I am afraid it is you who are becoming irrelevant, if ever you were relevant.

Go play with your friends, little boy – we adults have work to do, and serious people with whom to talk.

Once again, instead of supporting the ridiculous statement you made, you have resorted to sarcasm, name-calling, and misdirection – all the hallmarks of someone who cannot back up what he is saying.

And yes, I’ve seen your stuff.  Not overly impressed.  Looks like a guy with a DSLR and an ego bigger than Texas.  Might want to learn how to control the flaring and spotting when you are shooting into the sun – ooooppppsssss, sorry, that would mean actually learing something about the art  and science of photography – not your schtick.  Got it.

As for your last little quibble, I did post a link.  Not that I have anything to prove to you or any wannabe of your ilk.

Just another X gener – jeesh!

Grow up.  You have the mentality of a 5 year old.

Maybe you are a 5 year old pretending to be an adult?  Would explain a lot of things . . . . .

The jury will disregard the previous statement as irrelevant to the issue at hand. ”

Wow.  Way to give a non-response response.  We are talking about TODAY, not 20 years from now.  Come on, lil’ feller – defend your statement!

So, what you are saying, is that with modern equipment, basic photographic principles, proper lighting aids, etc. are no longer relevant?  Just let the camera do everything for you?  Wow – classic fauxtographic thinking.  “Any idiot with a DSLR . . . .”

I’m not even sure how to begin to respond to that nonsense.  I’ll leave most of it to Stef.

    Get ready.

IHF – “I’m a little concerned with the PP, a little too contrasty, and the color seems odd”

Agreed.  A little wanky with the contrast, and the colors are kind of all over the board, and some (see  http://www.flickr.com/photos/brokenfocus/7773004008/in/photostream ) are leaning on the green side . . . . . .

IHF – excellent suggestion about printing.  I have a staircase in my entry, and it is lined with 30×45 prints, ordered at different times – only way I know of to make sure that everything is as it should be.   If your monitor is calibrated correctly, and the printer does his job, the images will appear nearly identical.

BF – So, yes, go get some prints made, and see if they please you . . . . .  if they aren’t what you expected, time to calibrate the monitor, and re-work some images.

So, how many of you have shot weddings?

@ Brownie – “unique vision of the day”?  What does that mean?  Is this something your photog professor said?  Shooting a wedding is about 1 thing – making the client happy.  It is THEIR day.  These are THEIR memories.  There are lots of ways to shoot weddings – many different styles.    I’m not sure giving them a “unique vision of the day” is always the best course.  Give them something they can relate to – not someone else’s artistic interpretation of the events . . . . . unless that’s what they’ve asked for.

@ David – Lighting a bit basic in a candid shot . . . .  hmmmmmm . . . .  yeah . . . . . it’s a CANDID SHOT.  If you stop to fix the lighting, or move the subject to better lighting, it’s not CANDID anymore, is it?

Shooting a wedding (other than the formal portraiture sessions) is one of the hardest things a photographer will do.  You have to be everywhere at once – you need 20 sets of eyes, 20 camera/lens combinations all going at once, and need to do all of this discreetly.  You need to be unseen, unheard, yet omnipresent.  You take the lighting you are given in many situations, and often, there is little time for setting up the perfect composition.  It’s photojournalism in the midst of chaos.  Generally, speaking, I don’t have too many problems with the wedding photos – but I certainly understand why you are shying away from them – they are a pain in the ass, aren’t they?

Definitely not accepting anyones idiocy”  Except your own.

many people do know they’re fat and have no issues with it which shows a complete lack of self control and themselves.”  What do you care?  Does that interfere with your life?  Does it somehow create a burden on you?   And, ask yourself – why is a McDonalds cheeseburger 1.00, but a salad is 3.50?  It’s not always a free choice . . . .

LOL @ DasTurrible.. thats turrible (pun intended.  There should be no reason to ‘accept idiocy’  Sure your intellect may be smaller, but the majority of it is an excuse of being mentally lazy.

    James –

Those were the days, weren’t they?  My first gig was doing B&W for a daily newspaper – as low man I got to run all the film . . . . .  Pan-X and Tri-X mostly.  Could never quite get the smell of the chemicals out the clothes . . . .
