CC is the best one to listen to and he’s right on business classes…

In my opinion….In your friends category…some of the photos are too washed out from the sun, where half their faces are just bright bright with no detail and some are forced to squint from the light.  Just position them differently and use a fill flash or reflector if needed.  If you dont have a reflector, you can use some foil or use a piece of white or colored construction paper.

For composition, its subjective, but in one of them there’s a cowboy and the grass makes some soft leading lines.  I would position the cowboy in a position where the lines lead to him or your subject.  In that photos case, my eyes follow the lines, but jump to the left for the subject.

*** also my tip.  when you save or post a photo sometimes double check to see if the colors are what you want on a phone as well.

it can look perfect on a computer, then totally different when you upload, and horrible on a cell phone. So dont forget to check once in an while to see if everything is close.

Hope that helps…good luck and have some fun

Manoharan isn’t a bad photographer, I do however think it would think it’s a little akward to hang out with him if he keeps refering to himself in third person.  Funny at first though when you’re with the dudes.

i totally agree with I hate Fauxtography and his replies and links.  equipment helps, but he’s got proof and links that you just need the skills, creativity, and some talent.

thanks guys, yes it was taken at a re enactment.  it was super fun and was invaded by star trek nerds claiming to explore time and also the rennassance fair people.  funniest part were civil war actors, star trek, and ren fair people tried their best not to break character.

nesgram:  1st I’m into zoo photography as well and you’re absolutely right.  usually people make duck and cover when they see the canon 100-400m as you pull out to zoom.  they usually say, “that thing is huge” my friends and i usually follow up with “that’s what she said”

side note:  couple of great photo clubs in san diego that do nothing but zoo photography.  amazing work and great people who will be happy to critique your work and share their time and lenses with you.

the right tool for the right job, but that’s not the issue.
issue:  people and other moron photographers (not a beginner starting out and not grandma who just wants photos of grand kids) who thinks you suck because you’re camera is not as big or latest and greatest and that buying an expensive DSLR means automatically amazing photos.

you work hard, fine tune your craft, put in your dues and suffer to get to the point of being a good photographer.  still the mentality is the same…if its not a giant DSLR or full frame then you suck.

the argument is its not so much the camera, but the person behind the camera.  yes wildlife, zoo, aviation, birds, those should be done with a different camera because gorillas will tear you up…however, handing someone a camera doesn’t mean anything unless he/she or shim knows how to use it.  I’m not suggesting running up to a grizzly bear to take a shot with a 35mm to prove a point.  I’m just asking others what their horror stories are so we can see a pattern and relate to each other about myths of bigger camera = better photos.

great points guys and thanks for that link…really awesome photos…to show the doubters what talented people shooters can do with fuji.  <–thank you for this link.

and yes its a really great video by zack arias to say… hey it’s not so much the camera, its the person behind it.

and i have the same issue, people think my X-pro1 is film all the time.  on the good side, you are so innocent with that camera in street photography.  i also get all the same comments you do.  you should get a dslr, you should get a real camera… blah blah blah.  i just tell them thanks as well and shrug it off.

    @ nesgran.

aim for a more consistent amount of grain and a more consistent contrast <– not sure, how to do this…please advise, thanks.  also unsure what consistent contrast is.  like the background and foreground?

    thanks nesgran

thanks cameraclicker, ya, i shot in raw and all of them are in color.  the one that was out of focus, is actually me.  i gave my camera to a friend to take my photo and as always when you give your camera to someone (non photography friends), they usually mess up the shot.  Story – i told my friends i enlisted and i was getting tons of text messages telling me to be safe and the were going to give me a send off party…so sent them a photo of me in the union army… haha everyone thought i really joined the real military.  wasnt meant to be posted and more of a gag photo for my friends.

“It’s sharp, but you only really see one face, everyone is looking away, there is no real focal point.”  < —thanks you for this advice, i will definately remember that at the next shoot.

and photo of the guy signaling, i saw it in the view finder and thought it was pretty funny too.  he actually kept signaling, but no one listened.

since i’m a beginner and only looking to get better, any advice or critiquing is extremely helpful…

keep in mind, i’m running and being fired upon by fake bullets…ahhh the carnage…they wouldnt even let me say noooooooo when my friend faked died on the battlefield.

i added more, but this so far is my favorite…

well clicker, i’m going to take your advise, i going to a civil war re-enactment and take battle photos. i’ll try to keep their prius’ out of the shot to make it more realistic.

i talked to a couple of photographers in conflict areas and the aftermath areas.  when i went as a relief worker in hurricane sandy and a few other places.  i had a bit of a tough time, but i was able to stay and do something about it. photographers are there to capture and move on and i don’t think i have that yet.  i didnt realize the extent of depression and remorse. for now i’ll have to work my way up there.

well i dont want to actually be in the war, only the countries torn after war or disaster areas.  i spent 2 months the day after hurricane sandy as a relief worker, and loved the stress and work. it actually had meaning.  as a hobbyist, i wanted to go further, photography is starting to be such an addiction.  hence explore what a photojournalist does.

Hi Bill I was coming back from the zoo and stopped by La Jolla. close on the settings. f22 ans 2 seconds.  I had a cheap nd filter and polarizer I got from Frys. Did I compose right?  Do I need to use a gradient nd filter?  Since you’re there… next time you shoot there can I watch what you do? also saw your edit.wow how did you turn my phot from crap to awesome!

    Thanks Bill! jer
