i completely get what you are saying.  This time it just wasn’t the case (or maybe it was, but… Unavoidably so?). The picture (from a paid session) was OOF, and she was given advice and links to help with learning focus, and told to hold off on the business end of things until she got a better handle of the basics.  It was pretty cut and dry, and I DO think the information given was helpful as long as she puts it into practice.  It may have felt harsh to hear, but… How else can you say “your picture is out of focus”?

“But who is the photographer version of Gordon Ramsay?”  I don’t know… But I sure wish he’d show up lol

and again, thank you for allowing me vent, and hearing me out… Just typing to you all made me feel better.  I’m not alone.  There ARE sane people with a grip on reality out there 😉

Don, I’m with you… how fun would it be to

“OH!  WOW!  How I love selective color!  Look how it made their eyes just pop right out and grab hold of you.  AND I love the way you kind of colored outside the lines, and how you used blur to convey.  It’s so brave and rebellious.  I don’t even have words to describe how amazing this picture is.  If your clients don’t by a 30×20 of this to hang in their home they’re crazy!”

    or

“I love how dark this image is.  It’s difficult to make out the faces in the photo, and that adds some very artistic mystery to the photo.  I’m unsure of what this event was that you were capturing, but you did wonderfully.  I bet your clients just raved over it.  We all get self conscious in front of a camera, but the way you shot this, leaves out all the details that make us squirm when we see ourselves in photos, and just as simply as possible, depicts the memory of this family being all together.  Just lovely”

    You are AMAZING at photography!

UGH!  So tempting… yet…. I just can’t make myself be that cruel

My daughter had me look last night.  I thought it was just happening in her part of the internet world lol I woke up this morning to find out otherwise.

Anyway.  I see blue and green.  She yelled at me “No!  Mom!  for real!  Look at it!  What color is the dress?!”  (she sees white and gold) It’s blue and green damn it lol.  whelp, I seem to be the only one that sees it this way.  I wonder why???  I have optic nerve damage and my eyes are a mess, but I didn’t think it affected the way I see color too much.  Regardless, I think we can all agree that it’s a horrible picture, of a very ugly dress no matter the color.  and if they had hired a pro to take the picture, none of us would have ever saw it bwahahahahaha

I print nearly every photo I make.  Large?  eh, about 30% of the time.  With that said… I sometimes purposely make noisy pictures, or even add “grain” later if I want to.  I don’t think it’s about the noise, even when people say that it is for them.  It’s about light sensitivity and low light performance.  You aren’t going to use a crappy sensor if you are finding yourself often shooting in low light situations.  I don’t get too involved in gear talk, I’d rather talk about pictures and photographs than the gear used to make them.  Meeting gear heads in real life…. well I nearly always get a chuckle at their expense.  Your mega pixels and and frames per second, and LCD specs, and yadda yadda sensor,  just aren’t important but I’ll humor you and pretend that they are while we are talking 😉

it’s a nice snap of someone holding a camera.  The eye seems over sharpened though lol or maybe you worked it a little?  Not necessary for a shot like this

I agree that eyedoc could have worded things differently, (he was looking for a giggle from us, and it worked lol, I think most of us take things a little easier on people new to photography, but eyedoc is rather new as well, and I assume he didn’t feel he had to censor himself) but the outcome is the same.  There’s no cohesiveness (is that even a word?) to your port, and it’s uncomfortable to veiw.  Culling/editing would help your viewers tremendously, and by regularly culling it will in turn help your photography as well.  We get that you took issue with it, but I don’t think you understand how arrogant and insulting you have been, not only to eyedoc, but to all of us in general.  Not cool.

eyedoc took his licks, and we had a lot of laughs at his expense when he first arrived.  He asked if he could stick around and give his two cents, and I told him we all are learning, we all suck and want to improve, we all want better photography out there, and that his opinions and observations are just as valid as anyone else’s.  I have to admit, I thought he’d be a softer touch with our group critques considering how rough we were with him lol, but he settled in quickly.

My port…sigh… I honestly don’t understand how viewing my port will help you to swallow the critisim you have received from eyedoc but here it is just the same.  Knock yourself out http://www.500pxart.com/MelindaPotter?q=user&only=&order=rating

People who charge fellow artists to take pictures of them like this https://www.flickr.com/photos/dgterryphoto/sets/72157648485194673/

are the ones pretending to be something they’re not.

As far as deleting your account/post.  I’m not sure it’s possible.  It could be possible, but since so many in the past have changed their account names to things like “fuck Off”, “delete me”, and the like and yet their posts remain… I’m guessing there’s no option for it.  I once was successful at editing a post after the allotted time was up, but for the life of me I can’t remember how.

Im sorry that you didn’t take the time to realize how brutal and honest the critques usually are here.  Maybe a forum that requires people to sandwich any negative between complimentary nicey nice bullshit would be more your speed?  There are plenty forums like that out there.

My advice to you is in the future when you seek critisism of your work, be prepared mentally for it.  You might find this article helpful/useful

I feel I should apologize to eyedoc,

i know perfectly well you could have stood your own ground and handled this disagreement between the OP and yourself, but the amatuer comment, and the fact that you only said what all of us were thinking in your own words, just…  I had to say my peace.

seriously “only your best”. Rings in my head every time I post.  I get that this photographer is just a beginner but…

First off eyedoc is an amateur, meaning he doesn’t intend to make money with his camera.  I’m an amateur as well, and purely shoot for the love of it.  It simply doesn’t matter what our Flickr accounts look like.  Plus, what’s our photography have to do with yours?  Our photography could be a steaming pile of crap, or awe inspiring works of art, how does THIS information improve YOUR photography or the way you display/share it?
You on the other hand were asking for critique because you want to try your hand at going pro.  This automatically raises the bar as far as standards go.  You directed us to your Flickr.  It was noted that you shared too many pictures of the same subject, and that things felt uncomfortable and lacked any flow while viewing.  “Save your best work for your portfolio, not every shot on the memory card”.  Is sound advice given very frequently.  I cannot tell you how many times I have heard this advice, and I agree that you should take it.  Culling helps us in many ways, and it helps our viewers. So your Flickr is your dumping ground.  A lot of togs do the same.  I don’t show port worthy shots there either.  BUT when I go to your port, I see the same photos, I get the same feeling of disarray.  I see multiple shots of sessions, instead of just your best shot from a session.
There are other flaws to your work, but since you took the idea that your port is a mess and needs some organization so very well, I’ll refrain from elaborating.

Quit lashing out at a person that took the time to veiw all of your work, and give you a sound critique/opinion with useful criticism.  You may not liked hearing it, but you need to cull/edit your port geesh!  And please, don’t use the word amateur in a derogatory way.  I cannot tell you how much that annoys me.  It comes off pretentious as hell.

lol he’s really bad.  A GWAC if I ever saw one.

I find that the most heated “critques” are always about focus.  “why is it blurry?”, “looks like the focus fell on the hat instead of the subjects face” or “sorry but it’s just too OOF”.  These are the ones that seem to go off when the obvious is pointed out to them.  Then I think to myself “well, they were out of touch enough with reality to post an OOF shot for their photography peers to veiw”.  So it makes sense that they would be the ones that can’t handle any sort of critisism or questioning.

one time a tog was told her shot was OOF, and we all gave her advice related to learning how to focus.  She went nuts!  “Tell me to get my users manual out?!  I’m not stupid you know!  I know how to focus!  My camera was on auto focus, and didn’t hit the mark!  This has nothing to do with my skill set!  I will have you know…,blah blah blah “.  She really went off on me because I told her to practice the different focus settings with inanimate objects around the house, and to practice moving subject with her friends and family until she’s nailing it.  “There’s no need to make  your clients focus guineepigs”.  Names and insults went flying, and she deleted her post and left the group.  All because someone had the gall to call her blurry OOF picture out of focus.  It’s too the point know that if I see the words blurry or out of focus typed under a photo, I pop some popcorn, grab a blanket and wait for the explosion that’s about to take place lol. Hey, some people are just more delusional than others depending on how many people they have in their lives that coddle them

Here’s a cautionary tale that may interest you.  I only share it because you composite and you need to be diligent/thourgh and dot your I s and cross your Ts.  I didn’t go through all of your work to make sure it was legit.  I’ll leave that up to you and/or others if they feel up to it
