Ok the very first photo I see is bad:  https://www.flickr.com/photos/115907875@N06/14558465545/

You are way too close to the model and her features look distorted. IMHO you should delete this from your portfolio.

For the rest of the portfolio I would say: 20% Bad photos, 20% Good and 60%Average. Now don’t get me too wrong, I see potential. But you really need to practice and learn a few more things. It is a period of trial and error. It took me 2 years to figure out how to effectively use off-camera flash. At the beginning my photos were way worst than yours. Then I bought a light meter!!!

I think that you need to remove the woman playing the violin. Not good photos.

Other than that I think that you are not a Fauxtog.

Although a hobbyist, I believe that you are an above average landscape photographer. You are right – not so good with people.

Going through your photo gallery, I think that you have a good sense of composition and lighting.

Don’t ask for people to look for flaws as they will definitely find something even if there is nothing there. Ask for a critique (good or bad). This way you can keep doing what you are doing right and drop what you are doing wrong. Personally I think the right are much more than the wrong.

Booking a $5000 photographer without looking at the portfolio? Why?

Obviously the portfolio does not scream high end photography. I see a lot of bad photos and I wouldn’t book them for over a $1000. I lie. I wouldn’t book them at all.

If the fautog can produce same quality photos for the couple as in the portfolio (not the hardest task…) then I am afraid that they have no case except the breach of contract with the 2nd photographer, which they accepted a form of refund…

I think it is time for you to pursue another profession.

I’ve looked both your profiles on deviantart. Yes the other 38 pages of photos. Most date 2011. Now it is 2014 and I do not see any improvement, although there are a couple of portraits that I liked.

I though you were just messing with us by asking to see your photos. Do you honestly believe that this is NOT fautography? Did you see any of the work of other photographers?

I am sorry, but based on what I see my answer would be “YES, You are a fautographer!”

At the end of the day, it is not your gear that matters, but you. You can get superbly lit portraits with a just a camera and a reflector, or not even that.

    I say go for it!!!

If people are willing to pay after seeing this portfolio, what more can you say… except that they deserve whatever they get.

You can always add a digital signature to your photos and therefore it would be very easy to spot if stolen.

Apart from the fingers that look strange I believe that this is a very nice shot. Nice tone, composition and most important the highlights in the eyes that give life to the portrait. Obviously you are a skillful photographer and that shows also from your online portfolio. You’ve got some real gems there and I could not find a photo below pro standards.

As a matter of fact it would be good for some in this forum to view your lighting diagrams for educational purposes.

    Hope this helps.

Auto mode, Auto Focus with face detection, Auto ISO and easy mode monochrome. You need to start exploring more of your camera capabilities – and yours for that matter otherwise we are just giving critique to your camera and for the moment it does not seem to be doing a great job.

Now about your photos. You are not yet at a level to start charging anyone for your photography. Yes you can pursue a career in photography once you educate yourself on the subject.  The light is all wrong and so is your shutter speeds. You can do so much with one lightsource (i.e. sun, window, lamp, etc) and a reflector.

    One Light Portraits: Simple Elegance

Read this for start. Take some more practice shots and repost in about a week.

From what I see, I would say that you have taken some time to learn.

This level can be accomplished by at least a year shooting and practicing. (There are fautogs out there shooting for 15 years and cannot take this kind of photos)

I do not see WOW photos, but I think you are getting there. I liked most of your photos, except the one named “ryker”, although composition wise it is correct, I do not like the tight crop or the processing.

Obviously you’ve taken some time to learn how to shoot in natural light, using windows, back lit portraits etc.

What I am trying to say actually is to keep up the good work.

If they went on another country to shoot a wedding… they are probably good.

The final result will come from about 10% of that work that will be transformed beyond recognition in photoshop.

I agree with Bill that you have an eye for photography, but what I see is signs of inexperience and inconsistency in your outcome. Bought photoshop actions have been made by photographers to apply to their particular style. Using them on image inconsistent with their photos will yield a bad result most of the times.

I understand that you’ve just started. The outcome is average, but with potential should you further educate yourself in the subject.

One other thing. A yahoo email does not scream “professional”. You can get a free account from (zoho.com) and have an email with your company extension. (i.e. whatever@klportraits.com)
