This only allows jpegs? Well, here it is. How do I post the DNG?

Bill, did it come out eventually?

Next time, if it’s not a high speed projectile (something that could potentially puncture the eye and get inside) then stand in the shower with your eyes open to rinse it out. It could take up to 15 minutes, but it usually does the trick.

Thanks for the tips guys. I think I’m going to need some help with my Lightroom 5 usage – I think I’ve been using it wrong to process my RAW images!! I’m using my new 7D Mark II and every shot I see posted on the web at even 12,800 or 16,000 ISO is cleaner than my 1Dx shots, whereas MY 7DII RAW (first converted to DNG so LR5.6 can process them) look grainy and not so presentable after I do what I thought is my magic to them.

PLUS, the jpegs straight out of camera with medium NR look better than I can get them to look with DNG-processed lightroom!! How the heck is this possible?!

I want to post the DNGs so you pros can help me out – can I do that on Flickr? Or just post them directly here?

Whoa nelly, there, CC… I’m not doing any weddings! I was just trying to get a sense of how far folks are going without using a flash…

It’s because, of late, if I’m taking shots of Francesca or my wife or other family, I like the catch light in there eyes. If I produce an image at 10,000 or even 12,800 ISO, I’m happy I got the shot, but then I’ll look back and go, it would have looked better with small catch light in the eyes (if of course, she was looking at the camera during whatever action was happening).

Then I got to thinking, beyond a dark church, wouldn’t most pros be controlling the lighting and keeping the ISO as low as possible to avoid noise?

My 8-yr-old daughter Francesca has inherited my old 50D (with a Holga lens to start), and I assured her that EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU will share you inner-most feelings on her photography prowess once her flickr acct is up and running. 🙂

Isn’t “Family Love” an incestual porn reference? Gotta be careful with that…

Well, then I will borrow the words of the fraudster medium (who speaks with the dead) and yells at his audience when he doesn’t receive a hit from a session of cold readings, John Edward: “I’m not getting anything wrong – you’re just refusing to validate what I’m hearing from the other side!!”  🙂

That was my best guess. Another guess would be the interplay of the cone blue/yellow and red/green cone cells when stimulated by certain wavelengths of colors. There are many retinal cells which send signals to the brain based not only upon that they alone are stimulated, but also whether the surrounding cells are either stimulated or NOT stimulated. The relationship between the brain & retina is not and probably never will be fully understood. And sometimes things happen which illustrates this quite elegantly (hence the dress).

my point complements your statements from before… visual perception is a very intricate and influenced by many, many factors.  Each person has the ability to perceive different things based upon what they see and by what they THINK THEY SEE – this is the point I was making about the photo. It’s shot in morning sun, and for many persons, it tricks your brain into thinking what color shads should look like in this surround.

Again, if you cut the dress out of the bright background and put it against a uniform jet black background, most everyone would agree that the same color prevail.

by the by, to prove my theory out, if anyone has the time, cut the dress out of the background and place it on a uniform black or white background, and everyone will agree on the image.

    I hope. 🙂

    it’s figure/ground Gestalt visual perception…. kinda.

Like the “candle stick or 2 faces” illusion your brain can only see one thing at a time – you can MAKE yourself see the faces, or the candle stick, but not both together.

Similar thing here. In neurology, you learn that our brains see things as WE THINK THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE – for example, a subject seen against sun shining in our eyes (low in the sky) our brains KNOW that a softer, yellowish hue MUST be what we’re supposed to see in the subject, because it’s either morning or evening. However, you can also look at it and NOT PERCEIVE the backlit subject and see it’s true colors, blue/black.

Some people can control how they visually perceive certain phenomenon, others cannot (ie., the old/young lady illusion – many people will just say I see old or young and NEVER appreciate the other).

Well, I had the funny picture in my mind of a struggling photog using Zen rake with Monopoly money, and I had to make it work somehow. 🙂

I know that census and salary data is so skewed depending upon where you look and who you ask and, most of all, who’s telling the truth, that it is all suspect. I surmise that the only way to truly know is to examine one’s bank statements and deposit tickets. If you ask my out-of-work radiologist friend how much he can expect to earn, his outlook will be VERY different from the students you interview right after their white coat ceremony.

My mom lives on S.I. (the northside, not where Sandy hit) which is still my official address for many, many things in my life, including my photog business and for my website and for FB, and while she does live in an affluent area (whatever that means anymore), I can assure you there are many people who are struggling to make ends meet. Too many cars they can’t afford, McMansions on every block with no furniture inside – opulence out the wazzoo, but no one to pay for it.

And I did think an event photographer was the same as a wedding photographer – isn’t a wedding an event in the photog world? I guess I’m wrong?

The objective of a photography business is to use photography to rake in cash

Inasmuch as the typical MEDIAN take-home pay for a portrait / event photographer in NYC hovers somewhere under $40K, I’d suggest a Zen sand garden rake would be appropriate.

love the images, clearly from someone who ‘gets it.’

My own site contains a plethora of shots that are all over the place because I candidly shoot specially-abled kids (including my own daughter) in the 5 boroughs of NYC. BUT, it’s really not meant to attract new clients because my potential parents hear of me through word of mouth only and could care less of a website. I’ve even been asked to make a ‘photo-tips’ part of the site for parents who want to try their hand at editing and the like.

Your headed on the right path… more pwer to you! 🙂

The fact that you would even think that Flickr is my portfolio disturbs me.

What’s the reason for your attempt at an attack? Inasmuch as this link http://www.dgterryphoto.com/ brings the viewer to your portfolio, are you suggesting the photos from the Flickr link above are hand-picked from the portfolio? Perhaps filtered out as your best work?

Next time, you should be sure your brain is in gear before engaging the keyboard.

Have a look at The Grid on youtube, by Scott Kelby, especially the “blind critique” episodes.

Watch this video too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3TP7JBHFmw, if only from 1:00 to 2:25, to get an idea of WHAT to share with others.

This guy may not have the best photos in the world, but his idea is rock solid: if you think you want to share a shot it with others, look at it and tag it, and CLOSE THE PROGRAM for that day. Return to it tomorrow and look at it again. Believe me, you will see things you want to change almost instantly. The thought may go through your head ‘what in blazes was I thinking?!’
