I skimmed through the user manual for your camera and it has a lot of good information in it. If you only read the first chapter you’ll “understand what light, composition, and all the other terms mean.” I don’t know what manual shipped with your camera, but the online one is here: http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/201303/20130306135004922/NX1000_English.pdf

The great thing is it’s all about your camera.

I learned photography basics initially by watching videos by Ben Long. He has a video series on Lynda.com (a great resource for learning anything having to do with electronics or computers) called Foundations of Photography. It is several hours of instruction, but well worth the time. Lynda.com is a pay service but not expensive, and sometimes they have trial periods. Most educational institutions provide a group membership for staff and students alike, so you might want to check that too.

Art or not, I thoroughly enjoyed going through your photos.

I guess my images didn’t link, but they’re on the same flickr link above.

Thanks, I suppose color is one of the major things I have doubts about. I’ve noticed that a lot of my color processing ends up somewhere around here (which, to myself, I just refer to as ‘brown’). Personally I like it, but I always wonder if others find it garish.

I shot most of the day with a 75-300mm, but I had my prime lens in my pocket and swapped it in just before we left simply because it has become my favorite lens. Most of the shots are on the zoom lens, but the first three in the series are prime. I definitely need to get better at my cropping, I have no real method. Although some of the odd cropping is the edge of the frame because I missed the shot. I also have too many photos that I’ve cropped multiple ways and can’t decide which is best.

What kind of name is Kujo?

“Cujo” was the antagonist dog in a Stephen King novel (that’s a book) of the same name that was also adapted in to a fairly decent movie (when compared to other Stephen King movies).

I find ebi’s comments and critiques to be the some of the most useful on this forum.  Sometimes people equate brevity with lack of insight (or sometimes people are just offended too easily), but in many cases brevity will cause you to think and analyze more than receiving detailed explanations.  I initially came to this site to laugh at the photos on the main page and also to compare to my own to make sure I wasn’t just deluding myself into thinking my photography was decent.  I recently made the move from hobbyist to amateur, which for me was really just a change in mindset.  I wasn’t expecting much from this forum when I noticed it, but it has since become a very integral part of my personal development.

Anyway, I registered this account just to say thanks to the community here for trying to make us all better.
