Based on what gets posted, I think I am better than the crap I see for which people charge money. I’m an amateur, don’t do anything “professionally” but just want to be a better photographer. Since this forum is so brutal with crap, I feel that I can get honest opinions here vs some forum where people will ignore or just say that it’s nice.

A lot of my pics are just snaps/documenting life events, but it should be at least somewhat obvious which ones I tried to do more than that, if anyone chooses to go beyond the links above.

To be honest I don’t see the deference that you’re speaking of.  They all look like snaps to me.  I do notice you have an ongoing problem with white balance.  (Example: look at the third shot you provided?  See how her skin is yellow, but the whites of her eyes are blue?) Read  your manual, and learn how to custom white balance.  This alone will improve your future shots immensely.  I see you are experimenting with studio lighting.  Look up or google

    Split lighting
    Loop lighting
    Rembrandt lighting
    Butterfly lighting

    And broad and short lighting

Experiment and get to know each pattern and how broad and short lighting affects your photographs.  I think you will have better results than just winging it provides.
    I hope i helped a little, happy shooting 🙂

Thanks. Critical feedback is so much more useful, especially when it’s accompanied by suggestions on how to improve. That’s really what I wanted. I appreciate it. I know I have a lot to learn about studio lighting, and will be doing a good bit of research and experimenting.

Looking at just the third one, once the white balance is adjusted, I think it is about a stop too dark, at least for my taste.
