    the most important of which is a man-made foul odor recognizable by just about anyone worldwide as a “potentially deadly gas leak.”

    I didn’t realize sulphur was man made

    it’s been awhile since I was in premed chemistry, but I don’t think tetrahydrothiophane is naturally occurring – it is made with molecules which ARE naturally found. Neither is mercaptan, the other sulphur based aroma.

    No idea!  According to Wikipedia:  Ethanethiol is toxic. It occurs naturally as a minor component of petroleum, and may be added to otherwise odorless gaseous products such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to help warn of gas leaks.

    Ahhh, Wikipedia – where I learned that Elvis, Jim Morrison and Michael Jackson were all found alive and well doing private gigs in Al Capone’s vault until Amelia Earhart flew them to an undisclosed location believed to be somewhere NEAR Fantasy Island.
