Well, most of them are bad. But the picture of the girl with glasses and the case of Coke is competent in a Herschell Gordon Lewis kind of way. It has that Scum of the Earth feel to it. If he pursues that angle, he could do something nice for a very niche market.

    Doc,

I agree that some of the images look overly sharp and while those props may be cliche, they are what’s popular and if the clients like the look, I see nothing wrong with him using them. Overall I think he’s doing fairly well compared to those we have featured in this thread.
It’s very unfortunate that he doesn’t believe there’s any room for him to grow. He will only hold himself back. You’re best bet is to offer your advice (without being mean) and move on. Hopefully it will stick, even if subconsciously.

Honestly though, he’s one of the best ones that has been posted in this thread that I have seen.

So, I feel a teensy bit guilty posting this… but this popped up in my facebook feed today…

    “Fine Art Photography” apparently…

As per the above post… I don’t think many of the shots are bad. Also note that the wedding was his own daughters. There’s also some street photography in there.  It doesn’t look like he’s selling portraits or anything, and is doing it all for himself. Some of the shots do fit under “fine art” category, though it’s all through the structure of a photoblog.

    Wow I missed a lot!

    Re: the sand thing.
I think that’s been going on a while.  I never heard of it specifically for a blended family before, just in the same concept as a unity candle.  We had a unity candle at our wedding, wish we would have had the sand.  Ended up throwing away the yucky candle about 8 years later, partially and badly burned and collecting dust.
I don’t really do a lot of weddings but I’ve had probably actually more with sand than the candles these days.  The one I have coming up next has sand.

    A few thoughts…

Cain has NO idea what HDR is.

I do not understand why people post this crap.  I mean, surely you don’t think it looks good?  This is especially horrifying.  https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=323968431063114&set=a.299335460193078.67705.175746772551948&type=3&src=https%3A%2F%2Ffbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net%2Fhphotos-ak-ash3%2F529378_323968431063114_591753988_n.jpg&size=637%2C960

This makes me want to hurl.  https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=336316616494962&set=a.299335460193078.67705.175746772551948&type=3&src=https%3A%2F%2Ffbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net%2Fhphotos-ak-frc1%2F229603_336316616494962_2104283035_n.jpg&size=960%2C653

Someone should also find the original authors of the photos in the album where he says they’re not his, and report him.  I don’t know how to reverse image search myself.  Well for the ones he doesn’t credit.  This one https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=287982217995069&set=a.287982044661753.66191.175746772551948&type=3&theater – he clearly says who it is and that it’s All rights reserved.  IDIOT THAT MEANS YOU CAN’T USE IT.

I can’t find the one now that was in Colorado.  Yes, I was clicking on my phone but not posting all week.  Anyway, she said they were closing up shop, something about not having equipment.  I found it interesting (to say the least) that they said $3k of camera equipment was stolen from them – everything they had, so they couldn’t do business in the meantime.  They started asking for donations to replace it but I noticed there were two donation posts that were preceded by one that said everything the same except “it’s almost my birthday.”  I guess that didn’t work so they tried claiming it was stolen?  Fishy.

Scrolled back a little ways too.

    For https://www.facebook.com/dem.photographic?fref=ts
For this one, I’m not actually sure if it’s over sharpened or just saved  (or uploaded) at a very poor quality. I’m leaning at crappy quality. The use of flash and such is obviously a mistake. However, it bugs me that it seems that he ONLY takes pictures of women of a certain body type. Though, not sure he took all the photos on the wall. I’m going to guess that it isn’t so much a photographer’s business as a wank wall.

    Next is https://www.facebook.com/AlyssasBackwoodsPhotography
My suggestion to her would be to go out and grab some family, neighbors,  friends, etc and have them pose for some shoots. Not only to build confidence as a photographer, but also to grow her art a bit and get a better hang of her camera. Framing and lightening are the most obvious. The flash is causing issues. Ironing the white sheets in that baby pic might help as well. Watching product placement. Red eye. Some things can be fixed post production. Some can’t.

Growling at Alyssa.  If I see another one of these from the Southeast Missouri I might kill myself.  However, that would be letting the fauxtogs win, so I’m not sure.

I’ve seen the sand thing done at a few weddings, including one I shot in October. The mothers poured different colored sand in one vase to signify the blending of two families. My best friend and her husband did a knot-tying at their wedding. Their parents each came up and helped at one point. I do like the sand idea for blended families. I’d probably rather keep a vase of sand or a knotted cord from my wedding than a unity candle anyway.

I’ve seen a few different things in the weddings I’ve been to.. Sand is probably the one I’ve seen the most – although there were no children involved any of the times. It was to signify the lives coming together. Sometimes they would shake the sand to mix it, others would poke it down to kind of blend it while still maintaining a pretty pattern.
I’ve seen the hand fasting one too. Where they tie the bride and groom’s hands together with a rope and then perform the rest of the ceremony. I haven’t looked too far into that tradition though so I can’t tell you the history behind it.

Back sorta on topic here. I really, really hate when fauxtographers (and photographers, too) use horrid grammar or text speech… It’s lazy and unprofessional. Even in my text messages I don’t talk like that… the Babycakes Photography link just made me groan at that.
“BBBBBIIIIGGGGG things happening for my photography!!!! I’m sssoooo excited!!! Keep ur eyes open for NEWS!!” -ugh…

I bet whatever her news is, it’s blurry. Like so much in her life. *headdesk*
