Yesterday we visited the theatre at Casino Rama, and attended a Paul Anka concert. The signs said no cameras, no recordings, no food, no drinks. The guard let me take my camera in, with the warning that the ushers would throw me out if they saw my camera. The Photography Gods were smiling on me! A few minutes into the show, Paul Anka asked the folks who were taking cell phone photos if they heard an announcement about no photos. He then proceeded to tell us, previously he did an ad for Kodak, loved cameras, and to take all the photos we wanted! So, in the dark I took off my 10-20 and put on an 18-250, configured basic settings and here are a few results.
Someone in one forum was asking about white balance at concerts/shows with stage lighting. I saw this as an opportunity to collect a sample photo and comment. The show had a large monitor on either side of the stage, with a live feed from several cameras in the audience and above the stage. I took this photo because the scene looked just as represented here. The monitors show cyan lighting and the stage is more magenta. That suggests to me, the TV cameras are doing lighting correction to get good skin tones.
The show ran just under 2 hours and was thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable the entire time. He engaged the audience and had many anecdotes and even a couple of TV clips he showed on a screen, mid stage. He performed many of his hits and a few written by others. My favourite number was his take on Mack the Knife.

The last time I went to the circus but didn’t fair too well with photos. I was able to sneak my 7D in but only had a 24-70 on me and it just did not have the reach to do any justice. I could get the shots but just too far away, needed a longer lens to get in a little tighter for better light control.
What I usually do is a little social engineering before going in to the venue. I look for any person, usually older or about my age [I’m 42, if that helps] that looks like they are technologically challenged to get my gear in. On this night, if I would have guessed it was going to be so easy to get it in, I would have brought a bigger lens. Oh well.

Perhaps I look technologically challenged! LOL! I have a (mostly) white, full beard and usually dress casually. If that look is helping, I’m keeping it!

I’ve seen the Barenaked Ladies and Russel Peters there.
