After reading ArizonaGuy’s long post, I have to add, I learned that in a low-light situation it’s best to focus on the lightest object in the frame (when using autofocus) as the camera’s sensors will be able to pick it up better. And if you do have a speedlite, there are ways to use it’s excellent AF-beam focuser without the flash firing; this just helps the camera focus. I have minimal experience with speedlites myself, I’ve mainly only used them for portions of the last 2 weddings I did, but I have more to master with them. You should always angle them up towards the ceiling to diffuse the lighting and minimize shadows.
