85mm is considered the ideal focal length for headshots by many people. Peter Hurley actually recommends shooting at 85mm as this is the approximate equivalent to his 120mm on medium format. I’ve actually done the Peter Hurley style headshots before with the 85 and the results were excellent. However, in my experience there is no ideal focal length. Everyone’s appearance is affected differently by lens compression due to the varying shapes of faces. Some people look better at 85, 100, 135, etc.
