The 24-105 is indeed a great video lens. The reason it comes up so often is that for a long time you could buy the 5DII kit and later the 5DIII kit, sell off the lens and save a few bucks compared to buying the body only. Before the tamron and new canon 24-70 came out it had a reason for existance, now not so much.
